You can't go wrong with anything in the 270 but I have made the jump to Hammers, The 116AH will do anything that I need to do but I will say once again you really can't go wrong with anything in a 270, I'll never be without one
For me it's been the case of bullet influencing cartridge choice. Until Hammer's my .270 experiences were dismal. Loading for my son in laws .270, and 145 Shock Hammers, and his subsequent use impressed me, but will likely take your advice and look at the 116's.You can't go wrong with anything in the 270 but I have made the jump to Hammers, The 116AH will do anything that I need to do but I will say once again you really can't go wrong with anything in a 270, I'll never be without one
You were speaking of a do all .277 bullet for lower 48 which in my mind would include elk for sure and the possibility of moose both of which put you in bear country I realize you were excluding bear but he might not realize that. If I had a 270 with a fast twist barrel I would have opted for the 139 AH or the 156 HH but with the 10 twist I have the 145 shock hammer would be my choice for the added weight and still being able to hit 3100fps very easilyI don't have any experience with the Shock Hammers, so I'm curious what it might offer that the 124gr Hunter wouldn't be capable of providing too...?
The SH is just that, it's design is to have more initial devastation which it doesI don't have any experience with the Shock Hammers, so I'm curious what it might offer that the 124gr Hunter wouldn't be capable of providing too...?
Maybe just in the eye of the beholder. I'm not in need of as much BC as many, and the bigger more aggressive HP opens a bit faster on thin skinned game, and is really devastating without being overly destructive. Yet retains a good shank for the bigger game.I don't have any experience with the Shock Hammers, so I'm curious what it might offer that the 124gr Hunter wouldn't be capable of providing too...?
If I remember right, you're a speed demon with your rounds. Care to share specs on your loading for that 116gr AH...?You can't go wrong with anything in the 270 but I have made the jump to Hammers, The 116AH will do anything that I need to do but I will say once again you really can't go wrong with anything in a 270, I'll never be without one
Love the explanation. Thanks very much. I may have to look into that heavy SH For my rifle. You were speaking of a do all .277 bullets for lower 48 which in my mind would include elk for sure and the possibility of moose both of which put you in bear country I realize you were excluding bear but he might not realize that. If I had a 270 with a fast twist barrel I would have opted for the 139 AH or the 156 HH but with the 10 twist I have the 145 shock hammer would be my choice for the added weight and still being able to hit 3100fps very easily
If I remember right, you're a speed demon with your rounds. Care to share specs on your loading for that 116gr AH...?
Also, how do you think that bullet's performance compares with the 124gr HH and the 145gr SH?

Hey Harper, you have a photo of a loaded round? Those bands appear to come really far forward on the SH and look like they'd sit quite a ways outside the case mouth.Maybe just in the eye of the beholder. I'm not in need of as much BC as many, and the bigger more aggressive HP opens a bit faster on thin skinned game, and is really devastating without being overly destructive. Yet retains a good shank for the bigger game.
There is more left in it yet, I have some good brass to load now so we'll seeWHOA! That is hauling @$$!
I wonder how much hot sauce your extra 2 inches of barrel and improves case adds over a standard 270 in a 24" barrel.
I'm gonna put this out there as Steve has already mentioned it in another thread, There has been extensive "Real World" tests done with Hammers of all shapes and sizes and while the bullet always performs it has been proven the faster you push them the more devastating they are, and when I say devastating I'm not joking, I'm not gonna derail this thread but I will provide the info if your interested
What are your shot strings like? There is more left in it yet, I have some good brass to load now so we'll see
