270-300 Win Mag now feasible

Re: Berger 170s sometimes work...

I finally had a good cool day with minimal wind and mirage to confirm my zero. This is a 270-7mm Rem Mag, 72grs. Retumbo, 170gr. Berger (HBN Coated), Fed 215 primer and fire-formed Nosler brass, MV 3150fps. The average of four 3-shot groups at 800 yards was 5.1 inches.

You are shooting groups like that at 800 yards? Now that my 100yrd groups have settled down, confirming drop and shooting longer distances is next for me...

Nice shooting...

Re: Berger 170s sometimes work...

Thanks. Normal for this load....and my lack of ability has been in the 6-7" range at 800. I have fired one group at 1250yds to verify my drop and it was 12" for all five rounds. A G7 of 0.335 has worked well for me out to 1250yds. I look forward to hearing how your rifle performs.

Very nice- How far were you off the lands on the 270 Rem?

I'm hunting with the Cutting Edge 140s this year, after the season i will restart my sordid love hate with the berger beast and see if i can tame it by creating a bullet jump that Evil Knievel would envy.

Just got home shooting long...

My gun my rules...:)

Running @ 3225 fps with the Berger 170...72 grs Rl 26 @ .3 off the lands...

My target is this...

At 500 yrds...input data was right on...

At 670 yrds...running 2.5 mils...

At 765 yrds...running 3.4 mils...

At a .3 jump...

BJD...get off the lands...:)

Wind was gusting from the left...dialed in .3 mils...

You're right, im just out of time this year.

The CE bullets are awesome and the truth be told with the additional speed of the 140s, they are flatter shooting to 1000 and the energy difference is constant. About 400 ft lbs at all Ranges. One starts at 3900, one at 3500. Lots of energy!

Where are you hunting this year? Im leaving for Wyoming Elk soon and i hope to put this beast to the test!

You guys are having too much fun!

My 270-300WM is in getting my hunting stock re-bedded and the guy has been sick. He promised me it back before the season though.

I have my 270 Sherman and 270WSM's ready to go just in case. They all run the 165 Matrix at close to 3000fps.

I will be going out to 800 yards with some loads though when I get my 270-300WM back, probably with the 75g Retumbo and 165 and 170's. I would really like to hunt with it.

Good luck i hope you get it back soon. I also shoot a270Ackley with 150s and 165s. Very nice round!

Where and what are you hunting?

I am hunting Corson co. South Dakota, known for being as far away from a McDonalds as you can get.

Also, Spink Co. SD... both Whitetail tags.

What is interesting...In my 270 Wby, the accuracy load is also 75gr of Retumbo with the 165 Matrix. Ave speed is 3220 fps with an ES of 11.

Got the best accuracy with the 165 Matrix at .0315 and .01 off the lands...

That's always been where my bullets have flown best, but a .3. Or even a .4 as someone else posted, has me perplexed. The Bergers are on the shelf this season. After Mexico, ill review their worthiness in my operation.

It came back home...

I have to wait a week for the bedding to cure.

It was originally a Winchester Laredo 300WM, so it is a M70 Controlled Round Feed action. It has a 7STW magazine box and follower and the bolt stop has been shortened to feed 3.6" cartridges.

I had it re-barreled at Pac-Nor, 28" Super Match 1-8" twist 270-300WM(Sendero contour). The chamber was cut for .010 clearance with a 165 Matrix seated at 3.6".

Scope is a 4-20x50 Nitrex TR2(same as a Weaver Super Slam) EBX reticle, rings are Burris Signature ZEE with bushings and a 20MOA EGW picatinny rail.

The stock is a Fajen Classic Walnut with a Neidner butt plate and pistol grip cap. The barrel channel was bedded full length then the action was raised .010" on the pillars and the action was bedded including the first 3" of the barrel.
