270-300 Win Mag now feasible

Thanks Longtooth. That is nearly the initial loading that I have planned.

Who did your Savage pre fit with flutes?
Nice looking rig. You running a 6.5 x20 viper? That's what I have on my Savage 270wby. Your 270RM should be about same ballistics wise. I think wby has little longer neck than 7mm Rm. Did you just neck down from .284 to .277 with out changing neck length? I ve had really good results with max loads of Retumbo and RE33 and 170 Bergers per Bergers data sheet.

It is a Brux barrel (30", 1:7.5) that was pre-chambered by Frontier Gun Shop in Helena MT. The chamber is the stock .270/7mm Rem. Mag. reamer from PTG. The only noticeable difference that I have found is the .204" lead.

I have owned two of these Vipers, this one is pretty clear and tracks very well. My vertical correction over 28 MOA is 1.01.

Gene R, are you able to post up pic of that Berger load data sheet for the 170 Bergers?

Thanks...

And what is up with that rifle...did it take a selfie in a mirror?...:)

Nice Stick...I am curious to see what an extra two inches of barrel will get you in increased velocity...

LOL. If I get real serious, I will even clean the grease off my cell phone camera lens.

The bad news is that I measured COAL to the rifling with several bullets:
170gr. Berger - 3.560"
150gr. Nosler ABLR - 3.465"
150gr. Berger - 3.362"

Trouble free feeding from the magazine in this rifle seems to start about 3.395"....Darned.

I have that Choare stock on my Savage 111 in 25-06Ackley. I love the sling swivel placements for a sling. Very comfortable. Hope yours shoots well, let us know.

The 270wby has had better luck with the 170 Bergers than i have, i am curious as to the jump you will find for accuracy. I am guessing since the Weatherby cant find the lands, that a bigger jump than i have used must be necessary.

Are you able to replace your bottom metal with a removable magazine? My HS Precision DBM has a mag length of about 3.7". My Mark V mag box is max about 3.36"

My freebore on the 270 Wby is a whopping .378". Almost twice of your freebore...Heck...I need a longer bullet...:)

I can touch the lands with the 165gr Matrix at 3.48".

When are you able to shoot your rifle?

I am hoping to shoot late this evening. I have 15 rounds loaded:
Brass: New Nosler (neck sized .304"; approximately 0.004" tension)
Primer: Fed 215
Powder: 71 grs. H-1000
Bullet: Berger 170gr. EOL seated to 3.390" COAL HBN coated

It is a new barrel so I will be doing lots of cleaning. If I can get a decent 100 yard zero and find out where I am with the pressure and velocity; then I will be doing good.

I have modified the magazine box on a couple of Savages previously. The process is a real PITA. I have never looked for factory replacement metal for a Savage with a blind box. This is going to be my hunting rifle for center pivots, so I would like to use the magazine.

Here is the e-mail and data I received from Berger this morning:

Hi John,

Thanks for contacting us here at Berger Bullets. I've copied the load data for the .270 Wby and our new 170gr EOL bullets for you below. Do take note of the longer than normal COAL we had to use to keep the bullet ogive out of the case mouth. If you need anything else, please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us.

Thanks for the info…they are really pushing this bullet slow. They recommended 3.403" COAL…that may take some effort to fit into the Mark V mag box. The note explained why my cartridges looked funky at 3.38"…

In the Mark V…that meant that these bullets were jumping over .38" (not .038") before hitting the lands. Maybe that is why this bullet was, as BJD put it, "schizophrenic"…

The 170 Bergers seem much more consistent now that I can run them over 3.5" COAL.

Buck ammo beat me to it (posting data sheet). Same one I have. I was watching Boston getting there hat handed to them last night.

Gene

I may have to reconsider using the magazine.

Doing the reverse math with the 170 Bergers…(rough numbers)…if the ogive is at the case mouth @ 3.4" and the stock Weatherby freebore is .378"…does that mean that the cartridge length to touch the lands is approx 3.78" ?

No wonder I cannot even get close to the lands...

BA, very good thanks for info on barrel. I have 2 Vipers also due a backorder I forgot about and ordered anot her and forgot to cancel one. Kept it for a 338 I have. They both are clear and track good for me. I'd love to hear your velocity on that tube. Very exciting times for the Ole 270's. Maybe we won't have to hear all that **** from 6.5 and 7mm guys now:rolleyes::rolleyes:
