260 Remington help

New reloaded dumb ?
I'm looking reload 260 Remington what bullet do I need
I know it 26 cal but what bullet
264 dia
Or 6.5 bullet
Thanks
.264 is 6.5.

What twist is your barrel? If you know that, you'll narrow your choices. 1:9 is not fast enough for some of the options. 1:8 is the sweet spot for 260 imho. I run the 129s with RL19, Nosler brass, CCI large rifle primers. Same set up, I also slimg 130gr Swift Sirocco IIs.

While a .264" bullet is the proper size for 260 Remington and most other 6.5mm cartridges, .264" is not 6.5mm. .256" is 6.5mm. 6.5mm refers to the land diameter, but the bullet is sized based on the groove diameter. In my experience this is where the confusion about bullet size usually comes from.

With 1:9 twist you will have to figure out what is the highest bullet weight you can stabilize. Likely 130 and under possible even 130s won't work well.
My savage 260 is 1:8 twist and shoots 130s extremely well. Never tried 140s because I like the speed/weight combo of 130s.

When I ordered my Shilen 260 barrel the 1-9 was recommended for lighter bullets, 120-130 grains. I had 120's so I bought the 1-9 and have been very happy with it and see no need to go heavier for deer.

Check your bullet with the JBM twist stability calculator. Bullet length is the dominant factor in whether or not a bullet will stabilize. Look for an SG of 1.5 or more.
