257 caliber question

Here you go... The 25 creedmoor will run around 2950 to 3000fps easily with the 131gr blackjack. I use one for long range steel and competition. If you're using the Blackjack, get a 7 twist barrel for around 3000fps and if you run a faster round, get a 7.5 twist. I also have a 7.5 twist 25-06 and it moved the 131 up to 3200 but it's out of case capacity at that point. If you want to go faster you'll want a 25-06 AI, 257 Weatherby or 25 SAUM. They'll push 3400fps.

If you build or rebarrel, the slowest twist I would use is a 7.5, better to go 7.0. The heavy hammer hunter bullets require that fast twist as well, so why not run it? The blackjack guys did some testing with lighter factory 25-06 ammo and found no real adverse effects of using the fast twist on 100gr or 110gr bullets.

To answer your 257 Rob question, it'll run right about with the creed, maybe a touch faster. Know a few guys that have done 257 Rob Imp and it'll keep up with the 25-06 handily. Those 131gr bullets like to be around 2950fps and 3075fps in the speed range. use a 25-06 and you can hit either node easily and have room to spare.

just got done today with load dev for my sons 25sst.
61.8 grains of n565 @ 3286 with no heavy bolt lift or pressure signs, these 131 BJ have made the 25 cal a ton of fun

my barrel is 1-7.5 and its 26 inches

42.8gr of H4350 is pushing the 131 blackjacks at 3020 in my benchrest 25 Creedmoor. Has a 27" 1:7.25 twist M24 barrel. Using 6.5 Creedmoor Lapua brass with the necks turned and a .282 bushing. Ran them up to 3100 and backed off to find node around 3000. Very nice to shoot. Minimal recoil and fairly quick. Thinking of building a 25 Creedmoor coues rig next.

What kind of information, exactly, are you looking for? Black Jack Bullets, changed the 257 world with the introduction of the high BC 131 Ace. It's more about the 131 Ace & fast twist barrels that are needed, than what flavor cartridge you prefer to put it in. I'v done a lot of powder/primer/case testing in my 25 Creedmoor, with still more powders yet to test. My next Ace 131, will be in 25-06AI after big game seasons are over.

.257 wby all the way! I have had a 257 wby for 20+ years and out of all my calibers/rifles it's by far my favorite and always go to rifle for everything. Some may disagree on its ability but have taken **** near everything with it coyotes, deer, cougar, bear, elk etc. 100 gr TTSX 3675fps absolute laser! Only recovered one bullet in the off side hide on bull elk everything else complete pass through with amazing internal damage. Speed kills!

All the help being offered is great! Except that it keeps opening up new possibilities and questions. Since I have both the 250 and 250AI as well as the 25:06 and the 25:06AI, I'm wondering about the advisability of doing a barrel exchange on the short (250) or long (25:06) action to get to 7.5 twist for both effective and comfortable shooting. Opinions...

Here's a few things I'v learned about 25 Creedmoor:

Use ONLY SRP brass. This is a high pressure cartridge, even on the low end. Just now received Starline SRP 6.5 Creedmoor to give a go. Been using Alpha 25 Creedmoor.

I'm trying out Fed AR Match primers. Like these very much.

The fast twist barrel stabilizes 115-120 very well also, with very good velocity.

Works with medium to medium slow powders, pick your flavor that don't give absurd pressure signs with a comfortable velocity.

Buy 500 quantity of bullets, as I added 2-100pcs and they were very much different in length and bearing surface, from my 500 box.

Not sure what you're asking for on the action length question, but the long action will work just fine for the shorter rounds, but the long don't work so well on the short action. If you're wanting a switch barrel, get the 25 creedmoor barrel cut for a long action and throated so you can seat the bullets a bit farther out. The add a nice LA round barrel to the action and you'll have a great switch barrel set up.

I have a 25cr running 131s, H4350 and RL16 can easily get you to 3000-3050 fps with srp alpha brass, twist is 1:7. Mines a comp rifle built heavy in a chassis. My other toy that's almost done, is a Tikka t3 getting a 26" proof sendero carbon 1:7.5 25 saum. This should push the same bullet 3300-3350fps. Anything faster than than get an 8 twist, run a 28" barrel 257wby, 25wsm, 25-264wm, 257swt and of those are completely way overbore. But my saum running 3300 fps with the 350g7 of the blackjack, carries elk killing energy out to 1k yards, and shoots flatter and less wind than a 28 nosler with 195 a top speed. This little bullet is magical, I can't wait to see their dedicated hunting design.

Howdy !

Review of each case' spec's shows that the .250 Ackley improved has a 40* shoulder angle and nominal .455" shoulder diam.

A notional .250 Creedmoor would have a 30* shoulder angle and around the same shoulder diam as what the .250AI has.

The .25 Creedmoor ( I believe ) would have a slightly longer base-to-shoulder dimension than what the .250AI has.

Tthe powder storage area covered by the .25 Creedmoor would be slightly larger than that seen on the .250AI ( owing to the former's shallower shoulder angle ).
That fact added to the .25 Creedmoor's slightly longer base-to-shoulder dimension would result in it having a tad more case capacity that the .250AI ( IMHO ).

Case oal's are very close.

Brass preference would possibly bias one's decision ....one way or the other.

With regards,
357Mag
The base to shoulder dimension will be longer on a 40° 250 AI than it is on a 30° 25 Creedmoor.

Is anybody contemplating getting serious about a 25 PRC? Seems like it could be a screamer...
If you are referring to a 25 made from a 6.5 PRC, Blackjack has reamers for that.

If you are thinking of making one from a 300 PRC, I haven't seen anything about that.
