Hi all. I finally got my Winchester 25-06 back from the gunsmith. I had him take the trigger down to 2.5# before I did any loads. Well today was a very hot day. 95 degrees, but no wind. First day in quite some time. I figured it was ok, but I would have to wait a while inbetween shots to keep the barrel cool. Anyways, as some of you may have known, I ran into a small problem while reloading my 117g SBT's. I can only go to 3.150", any farther and my bullet gets stuck in the lands. I thought there was a problem, but as my targets showed, I dont think there is one bit of a problem. Since I can only go to 3.150", I kept the OAL at that for all the loads including 4 loads with the 87g Spitzer. I used H-4831 for both bullets. CCI BR primers were used along with Winchester cases. I waited 4-5 minutes between each shot.
This load was the first 3 shot tested. First shot was a flyer due to the last cleaning of the last break in shot.
117g SBT
52g H-4831
1.7" 3 shots @100 yards. Last 2 shots were .6"
3008 fps
117g SBT
53g H-4831
If you can believe this .043" Thats right! 3 shots 1 hole
3035 fps
117g SBT
54g H-4831
3 shots @100 yards .663"
3105 fps
These were the only 3 loads tried. I think it really loves the 117g SBT's, especially the 53g load. I still cant believe it. I have shot about 5 groups in the .1's with my .222 Rem, but I have never shot anything below, especially with a bigger cartridge. I will load it up again and if its still around 3/8" I know I found my load. It's not shooting as fast as I would like, but oh well I guess. I cant complain about the accuracy. I will shoot the load at 300 and 525 also to see how it groups. Next loads were with the 87g Sierra Spitzer. Same data as above, just a little more powder added. I had 4 loads to test here.
52g H-4831
3 shots @100 yards 1.028" Shot # 1 and 3 were touching
3106 fps
54g H-4831
3 shots @100 yards .805"
3198 fps
56g H-4831
3 shots @100 yards .676"
3300 fps
58g H-4831
3 shots @100 yards .533"
3450fps
I am extremely happy with how my loads shot. I was not expecting to see a 1 holer, but I could see through my scope that after 2 I was at 1 hole, and after the 3rd, the hole wasn't any bigger. The trigger definately helps. The rifle is completely stock except for trigger work.
