25-06 for long range

[ QUOTE ]
I have a question for some of you that go along with this title: What bullet would you suggest on whitetail deer from my Savage 110FP out to 600 yards? Right now I am reloading using 100g SMK with 56g IMR-4350. I have shot two deer with this load and I have some destructive damage on the deer. I don't think this load will be good at great distances, so what bullet would you suggest? Would the 115g VLD work great on whitetails out to 600 yards?

56gn of imr 4350 and 100SMK /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

ever chrono that load!!! Holy crap thats hot!

It seems the 110 accubond is THE bullet if you can get it to shoot, but the 115 b-tip has worked well for me.

Whew! Same load i used /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

shot SEVERAL 1/4" 3-shot groups at 200yds with that load in a factory rem BDL-SS DM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

im running 100gr smk,55.5 h-4831 with a jump to the lands, and that is on the manual hot side also.crony data somewhere lying around, guessing from memory like 3175fps.but running safely in this gun.it beat the 115nbt on paper at 500yds.the 115's make lung soup on a whitetail, but i have no need to wreck-em any more than the 100smk is going. hey jason, hows the finger?

I don't have a problem with the 100gr SMK, except that they really tear up the deer. Isn't that a problem when you are shooting long distance? Shouldn't I be looking for penetration instead of expansion?

What powder are you using & what barrel length? I used RL25
& 120 Part. in my 26" Sendero with good velocity. I have a good amt. of the 125 Wildcats now & when I get it back from
getting the Ackley tratment, I will find out what it will do.

Bucknutz,
Thanks for the link and congrats on the win! I don't think I can fit anymore shooting into the next month or so. Would like to make it to the Lewiston shoot one of these days as well. Too many irons in the fire.

Lerch,
115 Bergers, Midway out of stock backorder. Will look further. Do they shoot well in your Savage?

Here is a pic of how the 115 Btips go into the paper at 1022 yd. Starting to wobble....but still in there. The one on the bottom wasn't a full keyhole, my youngest boy just thought he would tear off the loose paper for me. I shot at clays on the back bank and dropped down on the target. Shot better than my bench gun that day. Go figure.

Shum -- that is what my 308-168SMK's looked like up there when i used them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

With 53grs of H4350 the 115 bergers were grouping about .5". This is jammed .020 into the lands and shooting about 3200fps or more.

I am looking forward to trying the 125 wildcats but right now I am preparing for a moose hunt so the 25-06 will have to wait a week or two.

thanks
Steve

No, at long range you want a rather fragil bullet because at the low velocity bullets built for penetration might not expand at all. Fragil bullets tend to not "blow up" as much at LR.

Well I got up to the country this past weekend and did a little shooting. I got in a box of the 130gr Wildcat Bonded cores from Kirby, to give a try on some of the feral hogs in a couple of months.

After looking through some of the load data here and there I decided on using RL-25 to start with, with some Ramshot Magnum and Magpro as a last choice.

Going through several data sources I came up with a starting point of 51grs for the RL-25. This did not however give me any idea of what the velocity might be. So I loaded up a pair and went to it. The first 2 were just over 2700fps on my Chrony. I bumped it up some more and went through the paces until I got it up to 3128, as a top end for this powder. My normal seating depth for this rifle is 3.250 for the Nosler 100gr BT, and then I generally seat everything else to this set depth. It works out about the same on most of the Nosler bullets, but the AB's I found needed to be seated just a little deeper to group.

Anyway, the 130's did a great job of poking nice round holes through the targets at 100 and 300 yds. The rifle is a factory Rem. BDL, with a Fajen laminate stock. The OAL for these loads ended up being 3.300" I am sure that I can more then likely squeeze them back a little more and shrink the group size considerably. I just didn't have the extra time to play with them like I really wanted to. Here are a couple of pics from the targets.(hopefully they will show up) I know they aren't sub MOA groups yet, but they have both proven to have potential. I also found that the faster you drive the 100's the better they fly.

I left several of the 110's for my daughter to try out on a hog hopefully in the next week or so. WE tried to find them this weekend but they weren't cooperating, and when they did make an appearance, a coyote came out as well and ran them off. Not good on his part. He was part of the following mornings breakfast club at Buzz Diner. As for the 130's even if I don't get a chance to work with them any more till hunting season, they are grouping good enough to hit the hogs we shoot at out to 300yd anyway.

Steve,

I got the 125s in last week and loaded up a set of test rounds. Found the tightest and loaded some more up for 200 yard testing. They shot a 1/2 group at 200. I am going to chrono the load and shoot 300 and 500 yards next.

nomosendero, Out of curiosity can you measure the length of the 125 UlD Wildcat, as I am interested to see how they compare with the 130 BCFBHP (1.222 in), 142 ULD (1.365 in) and 156 ULD (1.555 in).

Richard sent me some 125 ULD's (together with some 130 grn BCFBHP, and 156 grn 257's and 100grn 224's about 3 weeks ago, but from experience they won't arrive here in Oz to mid November.

I have been using the 25/06AI case since 1986 and love it, and feel confident you will be the same, once Kirby has given it the treatment.

In 2 rifles I have found that there is about a 225 fps increase in velocity over the standard 25/06. Both rifles were first chambered for the 25/06 tested and chronographed, and subsequently rechambered to the AI, so the increases in velocity in both instances were recorded in the same barrel.

I tested the 130 BCFBHP's about 3 months ago in my custom 25/06AI (Sako L61R action, Shilen 24 in 1 in 10 twist barrel, Fajen Lam Stock) and they gave excellent accuracy. Smallest group was .185 moa using 65.0 grains H870.

I tested the 142 grain ULD, but it failed to stabilise and keyholed into the target at 100 yards, which didn't surprise me when you look at the length of bullet. My chronograph data is listed below:
Rem case, Rem 91/2 M primer, with temp 20C:

130 grain Wildcat Bonded Core Flat Base HP seated .005 in into lands. Loaded length 3.240.
AR 2217 (H1000) ***
58.0 grains - 2960 fps
59.0 grains - 2982 fps
60.0 grains - 3019 fps (Max)
61.0 grains - 3059 fps (Above Max)

Reloader 25
58.0 grains - 2978 fps
59.0 grains - 3036 fps
60.0 grains - 3091 fps
61.0 grains - 3158 fps (Near Max/Max)

Vihtavouri N170
58.0 grains - 2861 fps
59.0 grains - 2855 fps
60.0 grains - 2925 fps
61.0 grains - 2969 fps (Normal Pressure)

Hodgdon 870
65.0 grains - 3038 fps (Max pressure)
66.0 grains - 3044 fps (Above Max)

142 grain Wildcat ULD seated .010 into lands. Loaded length 3.360 inches.
AR 2225 (H Retumbo)
59.0 grains - 2914 fps
60.0 grains - 2997 fps
61.0 grais - 3048 fps (Max)

Hodgdon 870
64.0 grains - 2953 fps
65 grains - 3018 fps (Max)

Earlier chronograph data from the Nosler 115 BT using Rem cases, Rem 91/2M primer was:
58.0 grains IMR 7828 - 3281 (Max)
59.0 grains Viht N165 - 3305 (Max)
63.0 grains H1000 - 3271 (Max) - Excellent Accuracy
61.0 grains RE 25 - 3218
62.0 grains Re 25 - 3293 fps (Max)
63.0 grains Viht N170 - 3202
64.0 grains Viht N170 - 3286 (Near Max)
67.0 grains H870 - 3171 (Normal pressure)

The H1000 data used in this test is about 2 - 3 grains slower burning, than the recently purchase lot of AR2217 that was used in the 130 grain Wildcat test.

Hope that the above data may be of some help when you get that 25/06 AI. Brian.
