Just saw this and it's the first I have seen and heard on the new .22 Nosler cartridge. Appears to be a lengthed 6.8 SPC with a rebated rim that is the same diameter as the .223 family. Below are a few pictures. These are not my pictures but they are the first of the .22 Nosler I have seen, so I figure I would share.

I think this is a very cool and interesting cartridge. It's a great candidate for a .223 bolt action that is in need of a rebarrel and one wants a more potent cartridge without the need of a new bolt. Nosler is marketing the .22 as an AR cartridge which I believe it will be a good fit for that platform as well. I honestly would like one for a short range varmint rifle in a heavy barrel bolt gun. It is a little more than a .222/.223 and doesn't burn as much powder and is not as big as the .22-250/.220 Swift. Let me know what you guys think below. I'm not getting caught up in the hype, but in my opinion this looks like a good cartridge and fits a niche role.

Hmmm....That gives me a few ideas...

Haha, me too. May have found the long lost AR case design that I have been looking for. Better performance than a .223 or 6x45, utilizes a standard AR-15 bolt, uses readily available magazines, and is not something overly complicated. I think a .22 Nosler on a Model 700 .223 action with a solid follower, 24" Sendero 1:12 twist, and loaded with 50gr V-MAXs would be devastating on groundhogs at 0-300 yards where I don't need the bigger .243 for the shorter shots. Hmmm.... I have some ideas as well haha gun) :D

Hmmmm that necked up to 6 or 6.5......any ideas on H2O capacity?

I was thinking of that as well, would make for an excellent all around cartridge in an AR. I do not have an exact number on the H2O capacity, a guy is suppose to give me some numbers tomorrow so I am hoping he holds true to that. I am going to guess it will be around 40 grains. The 6.8 SPC is around 36gr of capacity, but the .22 Nosler case is roughly .100 longer and also has a sharper shoulder. I am hearing it is right in the middle between the .223 and .22-250, so a 50gr at 3600fps and a 70/75 at 3100+ fps sounds pretty good to me for what it is!

God I hope so, I have about given up on the AR platform since WSSM brass got to be worth MORE than gold. If it is around 40, it should drive a 6.5 130gr REAL CLOSE to Creed territory. I don't consider the Gendel or SPC to be LEGIT LR deer rigs and everything else that is either you have issues finding bolts or brass. This could be a really great thing for the AR platform.

Nosler going to sell ar15 barrels then? wonder how long it would take for the marketplace to adopt a new ar15 round

I come up with 36gr H20 with RCBS cartridge design.
This, based on a 6.8 SPC modified per the drawing provided above and the provided description suggesting 25% more capacity than 223.
It does seem really good for an AR, but I don't know about bolt action.

A potential weakness standing out to me is the relatively large extractor groove. That being the area between back of rim and chamber supported web. It's 22thou greater unsupported than 223(and even ~3thou more unsupported than a .473 casehead), while 43thou larger web diameter than 223. This would have me research primer pocket life of 6.8SPC. If ok, then great.

Might as well build a 6.5 Grendel... Which I already have.

This new cartridge is obviously designed for the AR platform. I can't help but wonder with its severely rebated rim, if it would function in a bolt action. I think many here have used the 284 win and its offspring, WSMs and RUMs, that use rebated rims, with success but those are using a relatively small difference between the rim and base diameters.

22 Nosler .042"
284 Win .028"
WSMs .020"
RUMs .016"

Anyone care to comment on this?

I agree AZShooter.
Could lead to extraction issues -sooner.
Seems like AR compromises that are less than ideal (from a bolt action reloading perspective).
