22-250 projectile choice

Flat base bullets. Probably the best are the 64 and 60 grain Berger varmints. Then next the Speer 55 grain TNT. Then the Nosler hollowpoint flat base Varmageddon. These are in descending order of BC. All these will reach an SG of 1.5 in a 1:12 twist. The 55 grain hornady Vmax gets to SG of 1.4 here at 6000 ft altitude. An SG of 1.5 is a stability value that assures you get the full BC of a bullet.

I don't know if you are going to find any of that in factory ammo.

Hi, I have a sako varmint 22-250 with a 1:14 twist rate heavy barrel. I used to use factory federal premium ammo with the 50 gr Barnes x bullet through this rifle with good results, but this is no longer available in New Zealand. I have also used the Hornady superformance 50gr with reasonable results (just under MOA). I did find some 6o grain hornady custom but this shoots pretty rough as it just doesn't like the slower twist rate.

Factory ammo supply is inconsistent so I'm looking to start reloading, hence I'm looking for a good projectile for light game hunting/varmint hunting.

I have looked at GS custom, Barnes and Berger.....but they do not have a reasonable suitable for 1:14 twist.

Can anyone help with any suggestions for a good projectile that shoots well, and kills well that would suit a 1:14 twist?

Any load data would be greatly appreciated as well.

the 55 grain Hornaday Vmax will work n a 14" twist barrel. But I'd guess that a B/C of .265 is about max for a 1:14 barrel.

Good thread everyone. Can I pick your brain ? I just picked up a Savage BVSS with a heavy 26" brrl and accu trigger. Has a 1:12 twist.I have only shot factory ammo so far.Hornady 55 gr v max , and 50 gr superformance. Just breaking in the brrl (50 shots), Any suggestions on factory and hand loads for this set up ? Try the Sierra #1365 bullet seated .002" off the lands. For powder I found 35.5 grains of IMR3031 was near perfect in the three Savage 22-250's I've owned. Worst one shot .330" five shot groups, and the best groups were sub .200" five shot groups. XMR2015 didn't nearly as well. Yet has an almost identical burn rate and granular structure.

The 55 grain Hornady Vmax at a velocity of 3660 fps and 59 degrees at sea level has an SG of 0.8 which is well below 1 and well into instability territory for a 1:14 twist barrel. So a 55 gr Hornady Vmax is obviously a terrible choice for a 1:14 twist as is any boat tail bullet like I already stated. Opinions about bullet stability without numbers to back them up are pretty worthless.
