22-250 Load Suggestions

I just picked up a used Cooper Model 22 Varmint Extreme in 22-250. I planned on shooting 55 grain bullets in it, but may also try 50 grain. Does anyone have any load recommendations for this firearm? I am very excited about taking it out and shooting it. Thanks
Old standard is 35 gr. Varget under 55 gr. bullet with CCI primer. Expect about 3450 to 3500 fps. I usually start here and refine from there.

I used to shoot an older savage 110 pre 75 heavy barrel 26" 1/10 twist I cannot remember the load exactly, I always shot Speer 52 gr BTHP 4300 fps seems like I used H 4895 powder. 1 hole in the target @ 100 to 1000 yards every time, that was the best bullet I ever found. I used to shoot some 40 & 45 gr with that same load it was fun watching them Disintegrate and tumble after 600 yds. Many a Gopher, Coyote, Deer & Elk became mine because of that gun and load. Why I ever sold tha gun is beyond me. which I could find another one.

22-250, 26" bbl, 52gr Speer, and you got 4300 fps... really?

REALLY????

That's one hellova gun, or you're one hellova handloader!!!!!!

I've been loading the 22-250 RemMag for 55 years. It's one of my favorite calibers to shoot and reload. It eats IMR-3031 @ 33.6gr like candy but H-380 @ 37.4gr flows smoother and punches one round behind another using 55gr V MAX or 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.
These are my go to rounds for coyotes and rockchucks in Idaho. I have found that if you keep your speed below 3500fps it will double your barrel life.
4000fps burns a barrel in a thousand rounds or less and starts erosion of your throat in 600 rounds or less at the highest speeds. So be careful on the fps if you want your barrel to have any life. Good luck with your choices!

YEA I was, and that was with a LEE hand loader. to bad you will NEVER get to that status. Your ego will ALWAYS get in the way of your Success. and that's OK. the world Needs LOSERS

Yup... no experience at all.

My loadin' stuff.

Can't wait 'til I learn more so I can move up to one of those Lee Loaders...

Around 34 grains of 3031 with WLR primer and a 55 grainer.....work up to it. Could be hot depending on your rifle and lot of powder.

Of the 7 rifles I've owned in 22-250 every single one shot best with either 37.5 grs. of H380 or 40.5 grs of H414....52-55 gr bullets....seating depth was the fine tune element for a particular rifle....near 3800fps....
This cartridge had a short life as a top tier bench rest cartridge so 3/8"-1/2" @100yds is "mediocre" accuracy with this one...
(These ball powders are carbon ring foulers so clean accordingly)

Cat just a word of advice here. If I were you I'd stock up on AA2230:) Never know when you will need some.

The state of Connecticut put me (and two other small ammunition companies) out of business. We are second in liberalism to Kalifornia. When I finish up my current obligations, I am moving south (where all of my friends went).

Meowski :)

I use 38.5gr of 4064 and 52gr Sierra Matchking bullets. I shoot them out of a Browning Model 1885... It is a hot load, almost filling the case...

I like 36.5 gr Varget with 40 gr. 50 gr. V-Max or 52 gr. A-Max......380 powder was dirty for me so I went to magnum primers and lowered powder charge 4 grains to start. Back to Varget now!.....I have shot 300 to 600 rounds @ day with Molly coated bullets with little to no cleaning. I do that yearly since 1999.....no problems......good luck.
