176 Sheep dead...

100 000 000 sheep in Australia how many in the US ?
It seems to me from the story the dogs failed. Maybe the story does not tell all the story . I'd be wanting a few new dogs .

The dogs were killed, so yes they failed. The Siddoway family reports having several of the great pyrenees killed to date. I can't say how many sheep in the USA, but they report owning about 19,000. Dogs fighting, and dying here is a fact with wolf packs. Lots of imports have been tried with limited success. If you've got the answer I'm guessing the sheep companies would love to hear it. So far, guard dogs protecting stock against wolves is a pro-wolf lie told to gain sympathy and support. Yes they may run off an individual, but when that wolf comes back with a pack the odds change. Wolves calculate odds as well as the casino's in Vegas.

Absolutely. HARPERC is right on about wolves as usual. I've seen this kind of sheep damage (not so many dead sheep, but still most of the herd that was there--my grandfather's sheep) from packs of stray dogs--with little to nothing eaten. Can't imagine what a pack of actual wolves would/could do. A pack of wolves is an incredibly efficient killing (not necessarily eating) machine. My guess is those, albeit valiant, sheep dogs never really stood a chance if indeed this was a wolf pack attack.

This is part of what packs of dogs do. A pack of dogs is like the human gangs that roam the streets, 'living off the land', so to speak, and regularly destroying a great deal (killing in terms of wolves, much more than they need). To think realistically otherwise about a gang of humans or a pack of wolves is near the height of naivety. Welcome to the USA.

Burn the bodies during fire season? Nope.

There was a Great Pyrenees in this same area, two years ago that got lost. What'd he do? Mated with a female wolf and they had a litter of 9 pups. F&G went in and got the dog, and the pups. They collared the female and cut her loose.

They haven't had too great of luck,in this area...

Well if the guard dogs died then I withdraw my statement and apologise for any offence but I did not see that in the article. I agree a pack of wolves is an organised and calculating thing and they invented team work .
They would be smarter and tougher than domestic dogs of the same size and in a big pack , leathal .

Guard dogs are a FANTASTIC asset to certain livestock. Hands down, they take care of their flocks like a parent would. But when a bunch of over zealous creatures that can take down elk (with 4 foot long "spears" on their head) and moose that weigh over 1000 lbs and can destroy a car with one kick.....well then the few good guards you have protecting the livestock just don't have a chance.
Wolves have been idolized and made mythical by many a novel and many a movie. The real story of them is quite the opposite. I am not any where near the expert that some of these guys out west are, and have already made clear with their comments. But keep this in mind, we don't have all of these "conservation" folks yelling about the coyotes, because of the damage they do. Coyotes are small and weak compared to any wolf and I have personally seen what 3 or 4 of these little guys can do to family guard dogs like german shepards.
I would like to empathize with everyone who has to deal with the wolf problem. There are areas that my father and myself WERE contemplating elk hunts that will no longer be of any good advice. As an easterner who wants to take his father on one elk hunt before our time together is over, this is a concern.
BOTTOM LINE: Hunters are more wildlife enthusiast, conservationist, and protector of said animals than any other group will ever understand. We are naturalists plain and simple (those of us who are responsible of course) Do I ever want to see wolves go extinct, no. However, their has to be a balance and these damned individuals and groups that like "the pretty wild doggies" need to be shut the hell up and enlightened to how the world works outside of an office.
Sorry for the rant, but politics HAVE ruined a lot of what we all love and work our tails off for.

True story!

I RECALL A DEVICE CALLED A COYOTE GETTER THAT WOULD WORK DAY AND NIGHT AND EFFECTIVE. This device is a spring loaded pipe that shoots a load a stry------- down the throat of the animal activating the trigger bait. Obviously some would same this is inhumane..... I say SHUT UP YOU SACK OF SH__ AND TELL THAT TO THE SHEEP. THESE COYOTE GETTERS WERE USED BY THE US DEPT OF INTERIOR USFW AND NEED TO BE REINTRODUCED.

WE HAVE ENOUGH GLORIFIED BIOLOGIST RUNNING AROUND COLLECTING DATA FOR YEARS BUT THEY ARE NOT APPLYING THE DATA OR SOLVING THE PROBLEMS. THEY ARE JUST SPEND TAX DOLLARS. NOTHING LIKE A STUPID GOVERMENT LED BY STUPID INDIVIDUALS DOING STUPID THINGS. I AM GLAD WE HAVE A GOVERMENT SHUTDOWN.

I WANT TO TALK TO WHO EVER VOTED FOR THIS FOOL.

NO APOLOGIES FOR MY RANT, I AM JUST GETTING STARTED

The way things are going this will solve its self in one to two generations. Less game = less hunters. Less hunters = less money for game departments. Less money for game departments = less idiots working for the government. So it will eventually solve itself.

We need to start posting the pictures of the dead dogs on social media so the libtards can see what wolfs truly are.

If the govt is not going to let us control the population any better than that I think the govt which is our money by the way should pay the rancher for the sheep plus any future monies from those sheep

An old thread, but the issues remain.

Plenty of social media pictures, plenty of new incidents.

The thing is, one needs to realize thinking the opposition cares anything about the issues raised here. They value wolves over human life, they don't care if we choke to death on smoke, or if the wolves feast on the roasted bodies.

We are experiencing hazardous air quality every day, and it's being marketed as the "new normal". As if it's not the result of bad decisions, or that there aren't alternatives.

Pretty tough to communicate, negotiate, or debate with folks that view not being able to see the summer sun is "normal".

The antis do not love the wolves!

If they were true enviros they would have gotten behind the lawsuit filed by the Wy. State Farm Bureau and an interested Husband and Wife couple to stop the introduction of the Northern Canadian wolves.

The actual Yellowstone wolf was still there but it met the same fate as the sheep in this thread. The bureaucrats had no interest in saving the native wolf. They wanted a land shark! The couple I mention were studying the native wolf population and tried to save them from the Feds and their plan.

A land shark would turn the ranching into a death spiral and kill hunting!

In court a Federal District judge ordered the government to remove the "small experimental population " from the area (to save the 70 or so native wolves). He then put a hold on his order pending appeal to the Tenth Circuit of Appeals.

On appeal the Tenth Circuit reversed the local Federal judge. In their opinion they found that since the bureaucrats were "experts in their field" and allowed the "small experimental population" to remain.

The reason the term "small experimental population" is critical is because using that provision of the Endangered Species law gave the bureaucrats a loophole to bring the Northern Rocky Mountain wolves into the Greater Yellowstone area ......

From small beings come huge reprocussions. You can not like wolves for the sake of liking wolves or believe in the ESA as a tool to save NATIVE populations and support the SHAM planting of an invasive species to kill off ranching and hunting AND the native wolf!

Do you think the bird hunters using dogs would be in favor of having these devices scattered around? How about the ranch dog that gets killed by one of these "coyote getters" (this happened a few years ago in northeast WY).

The coyote getters can still be used with limited application but, they are highly restricted and that still does not prevent non-target animals from getting killed.
