1222 yard elk

I have a switchback on an atv trail I hunt from every year. This year was my longest kill on an elk at 1222 yards from the trail at the right of my hat in the background. My grandson who is West Elk Precision built the rifle, 300 Norma Improved. He's christened this one the unicorn bull.View attachment 616568
Your grandson built two fine shooting rifles for my wife this year.

That is an incredible shot. Congratulations

Looks like diagonally across the canyon. Would love to hear about your shot set-up and equipment and how you determined wind and to what value and how much you had to hold for wind?

Thanks!

Hello friends, I've been playing catch-up but here's more information.

The rifle; Borden Bigfoot Action, TriggerTech Diamond trigger, Krieger heavy varmint taper 30" and 9 twist, Manners EH1 stock and cheekpiece, titanium 5 port Muscle brake. Built by West Elk Precision in Cedaredge CO.

Scope; 7-35 Nightforce ATACR moa 2fp. Ken Farrell steel rings. I keep a sunshade on the scope to mitigate changing light as much as possible.

Load; Lapua 300 Norma cases fireformed to 40 degree improved configuration. 245 Berger EOL's at 3070 fps. 88 grains of N570.

Ranging done with a Leica 3500.com, ballistic calculation by Kestrel 5700 Elite AB

I'm shooting prone off an Atlas bipod from a switchback on an atv trail. I lay out a ground cloth, two tripods for ranging and spotting, and I have a small rotating tripod for the Kestrel, but I only shoot these distances in the morning when the air is calm.
For this shot there was no discernable air current, only spin drift to compensate for. I also have a mile long range to practice on.

Target photo was shot at a mile. Three shots with black arrowheads.
