I don't see any claw marks in the footprint photo. Makes it look like a sasquatch print. Reinhold Messner, a famous Himalyan climber, spent a long time chasing down the yeti legend in the Himalayas. He concluded that the "yeti" is a local bear species. He started out with an open mind, but a mind not raised in the local tradition of mystical thinking.

I saw the griz on my cow elk carcass a few days after. A few days after that this is what was left. I took the pic of hind foot right by the carcass. I know it's from a griz he demolished my buddies Cow elk carcass 60 yds away also. I'll find you another pic I took of a griz hind foot with no claw marks also. Here's more hind prints. No claws. Huh ? Must a lot of Sasquatch in the North and South Fork ? The one was feeding on a dead pack horse. The other was a week later that ate up a buddy's deer carcass. The look on my dogs face when he saw the size of prints. Lol. He locked on to something to my left in the trees 15 yds away. Never moved or barked. Rarely barks.i looked with binos and saw brown hair thru trees. Inslung rifle and thought here we go. I had rifle, bear spray and a knife. Im thinking a rifle shot is all I'm going to get. It was a mule and horse tied up inside trees. From that day i never hunted or fished without a pistol. If i see hind prints with claws ill let you know.

Hey Don, I have a pair of boots just like those. But, not when I was tracking/trailing/following a griz many years ago. I've a size 12, it was an insulated hunting boot…..the rear track print an mine were very similar in size. I'm guess'n it was a pretty decent bear!

I never caught up…..I'm guessing that I was moving a lot slower than it was! memtb

Any bullet (Auto loader bullets) that has any type of radius (ogive) from the tip to the major diameter, will do less damage in soft tissue due to tissue stretch and are more easily deflected

Most 10mm/.40 bullets don't have a radius all the way to the tip, unlike 9mm, 45acp etc ball ammo.

Buuuut, it's still not a very wide metplat, and only someone with a "deathwish" would consider JHP's for bear defense! memtb

All 10mm/40 has a similar shape. Not just FMJ.

Hey Todd ! Mine are size 12 Miendels. I bet that one in dried mud was a biggin. I was hesitant to go back up that canyon

a week later after buddy killed buck. There was snow and it had melted some so it was frozen mud. The griz was on way back down few days before I got there. I was 4 mi. to kill site. I chickened out and stopped about 2 mi. A long section of thick willows and crossing creek back and forth. I said that's far enough. Visabity sucked. I followed those griz tracks all the way down the canyon and it turned up and walked up the path to mountain I was on the week before.

I know that it's difficult to stop hunting where you really want to hunt…..maturity and good sense often trump your wants!
