The 30 Herrett did the job…pics and basic write up

I would say that both you and the Herrett did a mighty fine job
Thank you.

Im still kind of mumbling to myself about 1 thing. My 125gr Hornady SST blew up at ~2250 fps. That seems wrong to me. Entrance was small, lung and liver damage were reasonable, but I found bullet jacket chunks like 1/8th inch squares…2-3 just loose in the guts. I don't think it hit a rib. Shouldn't a hunting bullet be tougher considering I didn't hit a big bone?

The exit was small to ok size, but part of my tracking struggle was it didn't blow hair on the ground or blow blood out the exit that I could find. Missing those 2, I was half convinced I missed. Had he gone 100 yards through this rugged country, I don't thing foot prints alone would have been trackable. With no sign i would be forced to give up. I was lucky it was raining. More lucky it stopped while I gutted and hauled him out!

My theory is that SST expanded to full expansion, then kept expanding which seems to cause jacket shedding, core separation, etc. Basically expansion past maximum design intent. I'm guessing the bullet lose 1-3 petals and only about 70-90gr exited. Only thing recovered was jacket bits.

I'm choosing a soft bullet on purpose, to expand down to 1450fps.

Are there other theories I should be working with? What else could be happening. Anybody know what twist rate might be on this super 14 Contender in 30 Herrett?

Im re reading older threads on the Herretts.

I have taken quite a few deer over the ladt dozen years with a bolt in 16"/300 blk out. I mention because this closely approximates the 30 Herretts ballistics from a 10" bbl.
When I started with it I was very skeptical. I sectioned EVERY likely bullet I could get my hands on. As most were varmint bullets when pushed faster. I found a number of good ones and surprised some still was too fragile!!!
My 300 loads push a 125g almost 2200 15/20' from muzzle.
The Sierra 135HP is AWESOME accurate. But DISINTEGRATES Even @ 2050 fps!!!!
The 125 V-max is OK but shreds. I give it a OK cause probably 10/11 deer have been taken never lost a single and most DRT.
The 125 Nosler BT & Speer 130 are favorites. Both hold together & break bones well. Once a Nosler failed to exit. 20 yard base of neck spine.
The Sierra 125 FPHP is NO GO on deer. Fine on coyote. It Literally BOUNCED OFF a leg bone on a 250# buck quartering @ 165 yards... ONLY REASON I got deer was bullet re entered his neck and he bleed out!
Couple years back I picked up a Wilson 300 HAM'r bbl to get just a bit more umph for shots past 100.
I use a 125 Game Changer tip removed @ 2500+ fps. Its a lightning bolt. 3 so far thru & Thru DRT. Two never took a step! One jumped & ran but only went 30-35yards before he was on his chin.

98% of all my deer here are shot inside 125 yards. Vast majority inside 80. Making these cartridges shine. Light recoil miserly on powder and lower noise.
Believe it or not, I can hunt a Revolver here. But Contenders (Single shot pistols) are mot allowed. So I use my Blk Hawks but would Lovevta use my Herretts!!
