When your dogs get quilled the best way to remove them humanely is to use scissors to trim the end of the quill. This will un-trip the barb that is keeping the quill stuck in the flesh, or skin. Trim all of them then easily remove them with pliers.
I have not heard of this method of removing quills. Have you actually done this and it works?
I am getting really tired of emergency vet bills. Thought I might try it.

Yes, my dogs have been quilled over the years. A vet had to be involved in most cases.
That said, I'm kinda neutral on shooting porcupines. That means I don't care either way. If they are within 1/2 mile of our camp, I'll always shoot them. They have girdled enough trees already.

If I'm hunting an area away from camp, I'll often leave them to a fisher, or another hunter. At our camp I'll put the dead porky in an open area, belly up. Most often there is near zero left after 2 days, scavengers appreciate the meal.
I've been with youth hunters that enjoy shooting them. My usual favorite gun for such is a 17 HMR, one shot is enough.

If I had cattle, like pictured above, yeah, I'd want them gone.

My dad use to put the ranch dogs in a gunny sack up to their neck and hang the sack from the porch beam then put a stick through their mouth all the way back behind the teeth and tie a rope around one end of the stick then around the dogs neck and then back to the other end of the stick. This immobilized the dog and held their mouth open to pull the quills out of the mouth throat and tongue. It was a bloody messy task.
