Question for those that take large game at 300 to 600 yrds

I run lots of variable power scopes that start at 4X or 5X and go up to as much as 25X. I always carry at the minimum magnification on the scope in case a close shot presents itself while walking and if its a stationary target at longer distance I get set up and dial as necessary to get a good clear picture of where I am aiming.Generally it is about 12X unless it is a small critter than its higher. I would say 90% of my shots are from 12X to 16X on anything of distance over 500 yards.
In my SFP Sightrons, 8, 12, 16, and 24 power work out to 6, 4, 3, and 2 MOA for my reticle. Therefore those are my go to settings. I start at 8 and go up as needed. I'll generally dial elevation and hold windage. But
There are times I dial windage as well.

Yep. Acquire target on lower power and turn up as needed. A good tip is not to be too up in power on live game because it is very easy to lose them in the FOV after the impact. Learned through experience.
Exactly. Lost a nice mule deer, second shot, after zoomed way up to 25. Once he started moving and after recoil I lost him. Lesson learned.

Happened to me exactly as you described this past Saturday, however I was fortunate enough to find him after a two or more hour search.

Edited: Only one shot though.

I have a VX6 in 4-24 with Varmint reticle. Given that I'm shooting 155 hammers in a 7RM, I use the large triangle for holdovers. With a 200 yd zero, I'm taking all of my shots using the holdovers out to 600 and that means I'm at 16x (where the large triangle is). Hasn't failed me yet and I've killed a lot of critters with this setup.
Leupold has apparently spent enough time on this, because every time I pull the trigger within those ranges I just smile to myself and think "that's amazing".

I rarely shoot over 14x even out to a mile on targets.

For hunting I'm usually in the 8-12x range. On heavier recoiling rifles, you will not be able to spot shots at higher magnifications especially in compromised shooting positions. It's easy to lose the target if you need to get a follow up shot quickly.

I have some high magnification scopes and will occasionally use max magnification if trying to make precise target shots where follow up isn't important. But most high magnification scopes lose clarity and sharpness at the top end of magnification.

The more I shoot the less I desire high magnification scopes.
