338 378 weatherby barrel length

while I am new to this cartridge, but from my FB page for 338-378 shooters are getting 3k with 300 gr ers in factory form rifles.
I am currently playing with 267 HHT and 265 ABLR and 285 ELDM. I MAY out of curiosity give THOSE 300's a run if I have enough spin in my tube. Which I am not exactly sure.
All I know is that it's gonna be a fun ride
But if i ever shoot out this barrel it will be redone with a 28" Bartlein.
What are u getting in the 265 ablr ?

I prefer 32"-34" finished lengths in that size cartridge.
My shortest barrel running my 300-416 Rigby Improved is 30", changed the chamber design in 2022 and very happy with it.
My 338's are running 265's and 300's at above 3300fps and 3150fps respectively, yours may be lower.
I am going to 33XC and 37XC in the near future on these instead of my wildcat, brass will be better in the long run, even though they are not volume shooters by any means.

Cheers.
Who can do 32 to 34 inch barrel length finish my gun smith can only do 30

Is this a standard weatherby chamber or custom one.
Factory chamber specs. That's working for me for now. Knew a guy I bought custom 325 grn bullets from years ago. He was shooting cheytac necked down to .338 with those bullets he sold me. He was running .250" jump and told me worked good. So I went that direction on my Weatherby.
Also, when I was looking for new barrel talked to Dan Lilja and he advised not to go over 30" with Mark V like I have. So that's what I did. Dan has a lot of experience, great help.

Did he say why?
Pure physics. The more barrel you hang out there especially with larger magnums, the stronger action needs to be. Length / size of tenon. That's not saying they won't work, just whether it's all worth it in the big picture. Barrel whip / flex in receiver etc. AND, if you're packing it hunting how enjoyable is it? Longer barrel needs to be bigger to offset barrel whip / harmonic issues. Are we talking .800" @ muzzle on a 30", bigger over 30" so as to help with the whip.? Target shooting of course completely different.

Already have a 338 378 factory rifle was looking at changing barrel to a hart 30 inch for velocity. I currently have 2 30 378 weatherby one factory one with 30 inch barrel. What kinda velocity should I expect shooting from a 270 grain to a 300 grain bullets. And any opinions on hart barrel
Many many many moons ago I always wanted 338-378 before the 338LM came out
Then we started with a 338LM them to a LMAILS. GREAT for ELR. If for hunting go with a 338 NM!!!

Why the 338 norma magnum don't know much about it?
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Your original Post was on Barrel Length. If shooting ELR We like 30" to 35". Now not really for hunting due to weight, but if you have someone carry your firearm go for it. We have several barrels with tappers from 1.45" to 1.00". Recently received several barrels from Kreiger with 1.35" straight tube and 35" to finish at 34" with a 1:9 twist. Will be shooting a .338LMAILS. It is HEAVY with a Loaded McMillan XIT Stock and
I really like the 338LM and had discussions on the ballistics right here on LRH.
Then NM and LM are almost the same Ballistics.
I was proven incorrect with some of my thoughts when talking about the .338NM.
Do a little research on the .338NM. The military adopted it over the 338LM because of the shorter OAL and being able to cycle. With this used in a Hunting Rifle might have advantages. Now I don't want other members trying to prove me incorrect again so let the experts chime in.

With that I like the .338LMAILS (Lapua Magnum Ackley Improved Len Suchar) our design of the Reamer we use. Now we shoot off a bench with a single shot, dual port Action - Not for Hunting-Banging steel. More HP than the NM.
There are dozens of articles on comparison between the two. There are advantages in both!
This is just one article.

Thanks
