300 rum vs 300 prc which is better

I have two 300 RUM's and my hunting partner shoots the PRC. Very similar for sure. Only complaint on the RUM is OAL and fitting in the mag, even with the extended Fierce.
My favorite load is different than most. 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip on top of 97 grains of RL-25. 3450fps. Of course this is deer and antelope size game. Shoots in one hole.

If it were my choice, I would not hesitate going to the RUM.
Better case design, throated correctly, the RUM just outshines the PRC in every way.
There's plenty of factory options, if that's your route, or you can reload anything you like.

What rifles have you looked at?

Cheers.
MM, what are the case design elements you see as better? I took a look at case specs as I see both have about 0.305" neck, 30* neck, less body taper on PRC (0.017" vs 0.025"), both 0.534" case heads, the RUM is slightly rebated as body starts at 0.550". I am sincerely asking to learn and understand what you see as better. Appreciate the perspective 👍

I've had both as well. Either are a great choice. I've stuck to loading the 300 prc with 215 to 230 class bullets as it was designed for. They've all shot great. I've not tried the 245's just figuring it was a bit too much for the case. The rums on the other hand that I've loaded for I went the other way loading for speed. I specifically loaded the 190 Berger @ just over 3300 fps. Terminal performance is both dramatic and impressive at this kind of velocity.

I had a 300RUM built but felt that it was just too much blast for my liking. Eventually, I had the rifle rebarreled to 30 Nosler. The new cartridge selection was a good choice and drops game just as reliably has the RUM.
The 300PRC has become more popular, for whatever reason, than the 30 Nosler. I'd go with the 300PRC if I was making the decision now even though the Nosler and PRC are ballistic twins.

This would be a better choice selection.
RUM OR NOSLER.
For close comparison but Nosler Shouldn't of shortened the 30.
So maybe the 30 nos and 300prc.
Sorry didn't mean to derail. 🤣👍

I have a lss rum now but want to put a can on it and don't want to thread the barrel on it and I really love my rum now but was open to a 300prc if a rum was not out there available

You may have seen this, but Christensen arms has their FFT line also in either chambering.
Good length for using a suppressor.

Does the 22 inch barrel hurt performance any
Sure but not enough to make a difference for me when it comes to punching hide. Just depends on what you're after. One of my 300 PRC's is 22 inch plus my ultra seven. I'm about 29 iinches of barrel length overall. Any longer than that and I'm not interested as far as packing a suppressed rifle. That said I wouldn't go any shorter than 22 inches in either case.

A couple of 300 PRC's I've done with 22 inch barrels run about 2700 ft./s with 225 match Hornady ammo. Before that I had one at 20 inches and it shot 215 bergers at around 2800 ft./s.

Looking for feedback on the main differences and which is better looking to buy one or the other please leave feedback
As I saw some others say, "best" is relative.

First, the actions are slightly different. The RUM feed rails measure .0135 wider. Perhaps that's doesn't matter but I figured I'd mention it.

As for the purist that might suggest .300 PRC is a copy of a WM, it IS similar in a lot of ways. However the PRC is optimized for the type of bullets we use now with its longer neck length. Also though that would be worth a mention.

As between the RUM and the PRC…they really aren't the same. All things being equal, the RUM will pretty much always have more velocity. If that's what you want, then that's the cartridge. If you have the rifle barrel throated with some decent freebore you could launch 250 gr projos with some really good performance.

That said, if the speeds of a PRC are enough, you should be able to run some high BC bullets just fine without having to do much extra work and still get not much worst down range performance. I think you'd be fine with the 3.850 magazines across the board for loads where as if you were to try to get 250 gr RUMs to work, you're looking at almost 4.00 of OAL.
