I'm thinking of doing 1-9 barrel for my next 7mm rifle, talk me out of it.

I'm currently shooting the 180 ELDM's at 3130fps and taken them up to 3340fps in a 9 twist.

I also loaded them in my buddy's 1-8 twist 28 Nosler at 3070FPS and they've shot fine so far.

My next barrel is a 1-8, so we'll see. But they absolutely shoot good and stabilize in a 1-9. And I'm at sea level.

I didn't ever check the # of rifling's. Never worried or cared about that. I continue to learn more every day. Going back over my logs, the 180's were averaging slightly above 3100fps. I shoot at 5900'. The more I read, the more convinced I am becoming to go 1-8. I do believe Brian Litz, that a 1-9 would probably work just fine. Thanks to all. I appreciate reasoned, non-condescending answers. That's why I asked on this site. I had an STW that I just loved. I wanted to stay in that velocity class. Kids got into my reloading bench and changed the powders around. I didn't notice and blew that gun up. I don't need another gun but the new cartridge seems appealing, with the shorter, beltless body and much longer neck.

I don't have any issues with 185s in a 9 twist at 3400. Couldn't keep them together in the first barrel that was a 4 grove at those speeds. 3200 was all it would do and keep them together. As stated above. Throat condition will also play a part on bullets coming apart. As the throat in my last barrel got worse, so did the blowups.

Odd thing, with my 8" twist 7rum (short throat) the only thing that reliably holds together is a 175 eld-x. The Bergers and Sierra pills pop quite often. 168 and 180 Bergers popped; 180 and 183 Sierra's too... Those crappy little Hornady pills hold 1/2 moa as long as I keep the load a bit mild and use 50BMG to push.

I have a 7mm REM. Mag with a 26 inch SS barrel with an 8-1 twist, and 5R rifling. I am getting 3130 out of the 175 ELDX and 3170 out of 162 ELDX. It is a factory rifle. Reloader 26 and 25, (25 with the 162 bullet) and it has been a wonderfully accurate rifle. I am going after a big whitetail deer this weekend, hangs out in the back 40, and we will see.

I would get a 1-8" to run 180's. Throat condition could cause the bullets to come apart in mid flight too. Which is why I chose a 7mm Rem Mag. I can load it as hot or mild as I want. And with the 180gr ELDM's I let the BC do the work. I'd speak to a good barrel marker like Frank Green of Bartlein barrels on the subject.
Agreed. Talk to Frank. He's a wealth of info and wants you to have a positive experience.

Also agree with others, throat and rifling type and profile may have a great deal to do with it.

The current trend is to over twist everything. My rifle background is long range benchrest. I was taught, pick your bullet and use the slowest twist you can get away with…I don't know how many 6br improved barrels I have toasted but the last few years I was shooting most all my barrels were 8.5 twist running 105 hybrids and the book says they shouldn't work.

I've built two 28 Noslers shooting 195's in 9 twist. It's fine…the monos are the ones that will force you to go faster.

Good luck!
