Convince meā€¦

Someone convince me to build a 300 RUM. Im also kinda thinking about a 300 RUM AI and even +P'ing it. Literally balls to the wall 30 cal. Im thinking i would prefer to run bullets between a 174 ELD-VT and a 230 A-Tip. Sierra bullets will be in the mix as well.

You dont need to provide me with your load if you dont want, but i would like to know some of your guy's build specs and what kind of velocities you are getting. Pictures are a bonus!
What's you application with this setup?
I see a lot of talk about stupid high velocity, but very little about what really matters.

I'm running 245s at a measly 2850 from my 300 NMI, I can easily add 150 fps but I'm literally getting an ES of less than 5 with incredible consistency.
I've taken it to 1925 yards and there's zero vertical dispersion.

Well i think i have a bad barrel and bad brass. So if i were to redo it all, should i change it up completely or stick with the same? Its not like it would matter much, im rebuilding a gun. So my main trains of thoughts are, build max performance, or stick with what i got. Everyone else has been mentioning a few calibers that aren't a .532 bolt face, so it doesnt make sense for me to use those. I need something with a .532 bolt face.

I'd just rebarrel and use lapua cases, or better yet (in my opinion) get a 30 nosler barrel throated out properly and run Peterson brass.
I truly believe the 30 Nos is the best case design aside from an improved NM.

@lancetkenyon
What a fantastic rig. Can only dream of importing those stocks here nowadays. $$$$$ too much tax.
I guess that coyote didn't like itā€¦

Cheers.
P.S.
Nice Elk rifle.
My elk rifles:
300PRC 26" w. 9" can 230 Hyb @ 2995, this is a "glass them up, and shoot them from here" rifle. This replaced my seasoned 300RUM pushing 215s @ 3100, that killed a bunch of elk over 13 years. A lot of first elk, including my younger daughter's first bull at 11 years old, my son-in-law's first big game animal ever a great old bull, a cousin's first bull, another cousin's first bull, and my first rifle bull.

28 Nosler 26" w. Brake, 195 Elite @ 3096 this is a LR family member/friend rifle, but it will be getting a can by next year. Doesn't get shot much yet, because everyone grabs the 7RM.

7RM 26" w. Brake, 180 Hyb @ 2996. This is the go-to family/friend rifle. Most of my immediate and extended family have killed with this rifle. It is a semi-custom, but is the ONLY rifle I would never get rid of,even though it is my least expensive build. It was my late father-in-laws. We hunted together for 20+ years, and he never killed with it. So when he was in hospice, he asked me to build it up, and kill an elk with it for him. 2 days later, he passed away. I took it down, and rebarelled and chambered in the same 7RM he carried, new stock, new trigger, and S&B PMII 3-20x50. That fall, my younger daughter killed the first elk with it. I killed my best bull the next fall. My older daughter killed 2 years later. Numerous cousins, nephews, and friends that knew him well have killed with it. I still have to get my son-in-law and one nephew to kill with it, but we have plenty of time. It's has taken elk from 60ish to 882.

7SS 24" w. 6.5" can. 184 Hyb @ 2865. This is my pack around rifle for hiking all day. My nephew was ready to kill with it, but chose to carry the 7RM to join the family heirloom team.

This is a LONG RANGE HUNTING FORUM.
Those of us that hunt TRUE LR use the tools required to do such things with the best that we can. This means LONG barrels, steady rests and bags, scopes and other gadgets to do so.
I see so much banter here about 16.5", 18", 20" & 22" barrels it amazes me.
Who uses these barrel lengths for true LR hunting?

Unbelievable!
Yes!!!!!!!

I didn't build my 300RUM, it sort of came home with me by accident.
I am good friends with the owner and staff at Remingtons Importer here in Australia. I was in the middle of selling my gunsmithing business, a divorce and finishing off my 6.5mm builds all at the same time.
I spoke to my buddy about getting the old style cast followers to replace the junk pressed steel one's and amidst that conversation, they asked if I would be interested in a brand new old stock SPS Stainless in 300RUM at a dealer price. Well, it came home with me the next day. It's a 2015 build and is very nicely done, unlike the RR Serial number builds I have seen. Can't say I like the stock, but for now, I just use it as is. It will probably end up as a switch barrel in 300, 338 & 375 eventually.

Cheers.

Why not buy new brass and try it?
Whats it doing?
Are you getting clickers?
Lapua brass is plentiful
You can rent an aw reamer here
Get some high quality dies

I will try new brass first, that would be the easy route but my gun is pressuring out early. LanceTkenyon is getting 2995 with a 230 he said, 3-4 posts back. Now, i know it all depends on everything when it comes to achieving such velocities, but i would definently like to see my gun get better velocities. Same weight bullet, my gun pressures out at 2700. Im gonna have to try and switch powders as well, but were gonna do this one step at a time since the magnum game is so spendy.

When you say 'pressuring out early', what is it doing to suggest this?

I have had only ONE rifle that exhibited this early pressure thing, it was my own build on a trued, blueprinted REM 700 in 338 Edge. Was not my reamer, but it had a 'neck turn only' chamber and gave me fits, it would stick the bolt solid with middle road loads and NOT get published velocities. Tired of it, I re-reamed the chamber to need no neck turning, gave it +P throating and then sold it soon after. It was a disaster, kicking myself, I should have kept the action, but I was peeved, so off it wentā€¦

Cheers.

Has anyone mentioned the 300 Wheeler? I was doing a little research on it the other day, and it seems pretty legit without stepping up to a lapua bolt face. 230 hybrid around 3100 fps if I remember correctly..

I'm still not sure why you mount such "cheap" glass on all your rifles. It would be a shame to have something in your safe with a "gold ring" on the objective. šŸ˜‚

BTW - I wouldn't sell that 7RM for anything either! Definitely an heirloom!
