I was wanting to build a fast twist 22-250 for my next project probably a 1-7 twist so I can choose between 90 gn a-tip SMK or VLD. My question is what kind of velocity have you guy's seen? There is very little info that I have seen out there. Hodgedon only has info on the 80gn Pill- which was very disappointing! they claimed just over 2900 for a 80 grain? Doesn't seem right to me.
I just put some Varget in a 223 under a 75grain ELDM and got 2830FPS out of a 20'' AR!
The speeds looked much better for the 22-creedmoore, should I just go that route?
I don't think it would be worth all the expense if I can't improve much over the 223.

I ran 88 grain ELDMs out of a 6.5 twist 22-250 over 3200. I don't remember what they topped out at. I'll try to look back on powder speed etc

Edit: initial pressure test topped at 3191 compressed after broke in settled at 3215

I did 22-250 for years, Ackley version as well. Now I've got 4 22 Creedmoor's. Brass availability is the main reason. It's the easy button. I run 8 twist in all of them and mostly 80 gr eld-m. I've run 90 gr berger and jlk as well as 88 eld-m in all of them with no stability issues. 3200 fps without pushing it.

I'd go 22-250AI if you were going to spin up a new barrel. If for no other reason than not having to trim brass.

Like others have mentioned......22creedmoor is the easy button to do what you are looking to do.

I get 88g CC to over 3300fps in a 7" twist 30" barreled 22-250AI. 3200fps is feasible from a 22-250.
3400fps with 77g CC. 3300fps from a 22-250 is feasible.

BTW, I don't trust Hodgdons data, most of it is generated prediction and not real pressure tested…
At least not the Extreme line, it is made here and data is exactly as what I said.

Cheers.

I get 3100 FPS from my 22-250 1-7.5 twist with 88 gr EDL-M's. You have to judge if it's worth it.

Thats really cooking, a lot more like I would think it should be running. How was the accuracy?

Just under 1/2" at 100. 5 shot groups. Might be on me though. It was the first barrel I chambered myself. So? Gunsmith friend said the 6.5 twist would probably start tearing them up at that speed once the throat erodes. FWIW

What barrel length? I don't have a light weight rig so I was thinking maybe 26 or 28 inch carbon fiber barrel and either carbon stock or lightweight folding chassis.

24" off a model 7 Rem action. Never weigh it but probably under 7lb's with Swarovski Z5 5-25X52P.
Consider the spin of your bullets when you choose the 7 twist, much more spin than the .223. For your reference 22-250 AI is very close case capacity to the 22 Creedmore. There is much more info on the Creedmore.

I make my living with a fast twist 22 centerfire rifle. After the last time I had to find 22/250 brass, I ordered my next barrel in 22 creedmoor. Haven't settled on a bullet yet, it shoots the 80s from hornady and berger very well so far. But the availability of ho hum to premium brass (whichever you want) for the creed made the choice easy. Last time I needed 22/250 brass all I could find was Privi, and I was glad to get it.

With the availability of 22-250 brass, I don't know that I would consider a new build going that rout but anyhoo, I have an 8 twist 24 inch 22-250 running 80gr SMK's @ 3212 over CFE 223. I love the rifle but like dmr400 will likely re-barrel to another 22cal variant, when its time, due to the availability of quality brass. Only have 50 pieces of new left, unless of course brass shows back up.

I'm shooting the 77 grain TMK in my Tikka @ 3150, it's only got the 22" barrel. It shoots good out to 600 on steel and has accounted for a couple varmints and one deer. I'm using 4064 in it now, might be able to get a little more velocity with another powder?
Shooting the 80.5 grain Berger in another 8 twisted '250 but have not shot that one through the chrono yet. It shoots good but not sure well how well it will expand on critters.
