As i shoot my suppressed magnum more and more, i come to realize im not liking it as much anymore. Im not a fan of the mirage off of the suppressor. Although the sound suppression is nice, i definently feel like the heat is lasting alot longer in the suppressor and the barrel, when im going out and doing some general shooting. What are your experiences with a suppressed magnum?

I prefer the recoil reduction and reduced muzzle rise from good muzzle brake. For small stuff, suppressor all the way.

The new thunderbeast with the brake (after the can) looks interesting for magnums.

I have the Omega 300 with the brake and its cool but im getting irritated with the whole suppressed magnum thing.
 
If you're wanting to put rounds down the tube for general range shooting, then a suppressed rifle is probably not the best idea…because the suppressor gets too hot even after a three shot group. Also, I find no recoil reduction and depending on the cartridge the shoulder can start to get bruised.

Yeah im thinking i might park that thing honestly. Its fun to shoot at range but when i want to bang steel at 700, its alot tougher to do with my 223 trainer rifle.
 
Every rifle I own except two are suppressed. One is because it is the family rifle that gets loaned out to anyone who draws a tag and needs a rifle. The other is just because I haven't drawn a tag to use it on so I haven't bothered to swap over from brake to can.

But for me, I don't shoot magnums a ton when banging steel. Even out to 1400+. I even leave my short mags home most of the time.

Other than that, my bigger magnums are still shot suppressed, especially for hunting. Game changing shooting a can for hunting. They are definitely more stout to shoot, but we'll worth the tradeoff for hunting.

But if I am out banging steel shooting 80-120 rounds in a 3 hour morning, even suppressed 6CM, 25CM, .260AI, and 6.5SLRs will tenderize a collar bone.
 
Do you have a suppressor wrap? That will help considerably with the mirage, however, it won't help with the heat coming from the end cap (brake portion) of your can.

I use a Thunderbeast 338 Ultra on my 338 RUM. The suppression is incredible. Recoil gets a little stout though as it doesn't reduce recoil as effectively compared to my 5 port brake.

Even then, I'd still prefer using the suppressor.
 
I have the same omega 300 and put a corset style cover on it and so far don't have issues with mirage. I haven't had it on any of my big magnums yet . The threads on my m77 300wm are definitely the worst I've seen cut by a gunsmith. The gun has a kdf break on it and shoots good . I don't want to try the can knowing the threads are horrible. I'll wait till the barrel is toast. I'm sure there's a point of diminishing return with cans on big magnums for the recoil reduction but haven't had a gun or can to test it on . My cans are mostly 30 cal and some of my other mags are to big . 338wm ,375ruger ,300rum.
 
To the OP, I had the same problems as you. Not much I can do about the recoil but grin and bear it. As to the mirage, I have found a good can cover works wonders. I have a Coletac HTP and it does a great job stopping mirage from the can. However it also takes longer for the can and barrel it is attached to to cool down. To aid in cooling down between groups I use a barrel cooler. The best one I have is a cheap one I think I got on Amazon. When its really hot out I also take along an insulated bottle of ice water, and wet a rag or small towel to rub the barrel down to speed cooling. Coletac also makes a light weight mirage shield that is inexpensive. Hope this helps.
 
Hunting, I use the suppressor but if I'm going to be on the range I stick with a brake because of the mirage issue. I run the JK 155 on my 28 Nosler because of the light weight and wouldn't want to put more than 3-4 rounds through it anyway. I have found that my heavier cans (better for thermal) effect the accuracy of the Seekins with the thin barrel more than a POI shift.
 
Most of my big game hunting is now done with a suppressed rifle. I use the 300 Dominus from Thunderbeast on everything from my 300 RUM to 300 WSM and on down to my 6.5 PRC. Most of my pratice is done without the can and then just confirm my zero when the can goes on just before I hunting. The can wears a cover to help block heat waves, but that rarely happens in a hunting situations. A shot - maybe two - and it is over.
 
I love my ab raptor 10 on my 300 rum. It sounds awesome but def effected the recoil in a negative way as before with the brake it was more of a slow push back now it's much sharper. Recoil is still less than my 338-378. After 5 rounds the mirage is quite noticeable If the wind isn't blowing a good cover would fix that but haven't ordered one for it yet. Had to sight the rifle in again bc it moved poi down about 3 inches at 100. Still worth it though as that thing was miserable to shoot without the can on it
 
Have a Harvester EVO on my 300wsm and 308. I put one of the simple mechanix suppressor covers on it. It does remove most mirage and is only $20 on Amazon. I shoot my 308 a lot more than my 300 and out to 1000+. The suppressor has made me a more confident shooter and it will for sure be part of all my hunting trips. I have never been one to buck much with recoil, always shot larger calibers and shotguns. But I do have brakes on all my rifles now, mainly to watch impact and for shooting greater than 40 shots without being sore tomorrow.

Buy a thermal cover.
