28 Nosler, 180g at 3150 or 168g at 3250 will get the job done in spades. Brux 5R, 8.5T, barrel, throated for 180g ELDM would be tops on my list to try, .796 BC. Second choice would be a 6.5/06 AI or 6.5 PRC with the 147g ELDM at 3150 fps. I would want a lot of energy dump inside the animal, thus the ELD-M.

Maybe you meant a Bartlein 5r? .....either way both are great barrel manufacturers. I think Brux only does 4 and 6 groove barrels.

Great info, so do you shoot them farther forward to break the front legs? Or would you stay with a normal boiler room hit?
My preferred shot on goats is through one or both front shoulders with a copper bullet that won't damage too much meat. Even with a well planned shot they can manage to get into some nasty terrain in a shockingly short amount of time if they're able to run

ELD-M is a poor choice for goats. They have incredibly thick fur later in the season + thick bones and I think you'd risk splashing the bullet with poor penetration, especially at the ranges goats are usually taken at and that MV.

...anyone shooting a .223, .270 or the man-bun 6.5 cr at 1000 yrds on a live animal should be admitted to the psycho-ward or jailed !!!!
I'd love to see someone put a first round hit on an animal sized target at 1000 yards from a field shooting position in the mountains. Even more so if it's some high recoiling magnum.
Seriously, who tf is shooting at goats in the mountains at 1000?

Bill, my fear would be something that pencils through or expands just prior to exiting. The Nosler LRAB would be a top pick for a bonded core bullet. Nathan down in New Zealand used to anneal his 162g A max or SST for use on those large goats they have there, making them softer, shot out of a 7 Practical at 3050 fps, approximately.

If he goes heart or lungs instead of bone, it'll work fine. The fur isn't made of steel and their hide isn't even thick.
I wouldn't shoot a high speed broadhead at a goat if there was any chance I'd only get lungs.

..with unforeseen wind, little vegetation or grasses to watch wind, mirage, shadows, questionable rest, uneven body position, chance of body movement during time of flight..all at 1000 yards...no how, no way..no registered guide would let you even try it and why would anyone even think of trying it..with any cartridge..

I used a 7LRM on my goat hunt with 180 grain Berger Hybrids and they worked great. I would not hesitate to take a goat with my 6.5 PRC with 140 Accubonds either, but not at 1000 yards. I would limit the shots to 600 or less. With the 180's out of the LRM they are still good to go at 1K but I don't recommend a shot at that distance on a goat or anything else in the High Mountains. To many things can change to quick to take shots at that distance. JMO

From the calibers that you listed you wont have any problems. Shot placement is everything in my opinion. Put a good quality bullet in the boiler room at distances and velocities as listed by the manufacturer and your going home with a goat. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate all your inputs. I'm signing off on this post because I have the info I wanted. For those that feel a primal desire to question a person's capability without knowing them and instead want to ask if someone actually can log a first shot hit on an animal at distance, I remember you from the last PRS comp….keep practicing! You almost got there!!!!

Seriously, for those that made meaningful contributions, I thank you. I hope to repay the favor in the future!

Cheers!
