Choosing between scratch build and gently used Savage 112 varmint

It does look identical to the VLP stock but mine does not have a lower magazine dump. Can't find the springs listed on SSS, I assumed they were listed under Savage replacement parts? -B&C

Choosing between scratch build and gently used Savage 112 varmint

Just thought I would come back and say thanks for the input from everybody. I bought the rifle off of Gunbroker, got it by Christmas, and shot some test loads through it today. I did get a box of Win Supreme loads from relatives but they didn't shoot so well and the nickel that came out on the...

    Prarie dog recon

Just call around like I said, it was the first time that we went as well. 22-250, 204 and lots of Kentucky windage but that had little to no bearing on finding plenty prairie dogs. We stayed at the Syracuse in, it was $65 for a 2 queen room I believe, I wouldn't call it up to date and in prime...

    Prarie dog recon

I went prairie dog hunting in Syracuse last summer. Plenty of Dog's to shoot and really no need to pay to go do it. Call around some diners, the motel (I believe there was only one, and if you tell them you are interested in staying but...) or the local agricultural coop/extension office and ask...

Choosing between scratch build and gently used Savage 112 varmint

I asked the seller what the details are on the scope and if he could attempt to take a picture of the "light scratch" that is described in the listing. Seller has 100% positive feedback with 25 transaction. The gun in this listing is described better than the gun that I saw at the gun show I...

Choosing between scratch build and gently used Savage 112 varmint

I think I'm leaning toward getting a used 112 since it's a long action and cheaper in the short run with better upgrade paths. Although I will still be very tempted to buy one of the orange and gray stocky stocks while they are on sale... Here's a gun broker listing for an identical gun with a...

Choosing between scratch build and gently used Savage 112 varmint

I have recently been racking up a list of items that I would like to put into a custom rifle. I went to a gun show today and found a nice gently used Savage 112 BVSS in one of the calibers that I was looking for and now I can't decide which direction would be better to go in. Part of it is...

    Contemplating First Custom Rifle

Is it possible to "three point turn" an '06 cartridge into a savage short action? If it's single shot magazine is irrelevant if the mag holds the rounds and I had read somewhere that savage did not have a true short action anyway, in that it was slightly longer than standard short action anyway...

What's your choice load for that kind of velocity out of the AI? That bullet has more kinetic energy with 140s than my 7mm that I'm trying to get away from due to recoil. I don't really plan on using bullets over 100gr regardless of what rifle I'm shooting so is there still a significant...

    Contemplating First Custom Rifle

Certainly looks like a good round but barrel life is a pretty big setback. 1000 rounds out of a $400 barrel pains me, roughly 500 less than a 25-06, although I suppose there are always drawbacks. 6.5 284 also lacks cheap brass availability... Hmm but you can't argue with a 1k winning...

    Contemplating First Custom Rifle

I can hardly find much mention of a 6.5-06AI yet alone ballistics data for the round. I assume brass prices go up significantly for custom factory brass versus going through the trouble of forming it yourself? Belted magnum in the 6.5 rem mag seems like a bad idea due to belted magnum case...

    Contemplating First Custom Rifle

Yeah I'm definitely looking at a rather heavy gun. As expected I'm really not too worried about it. Chances are it will be just as much a target rifle as a hunting rifle. Plus the more accurate the gun the shorter distance you have to walk to get an acceptable shot, that's the whole point right...

    Contemplating First Custom Rifle

I've been contemplating building a rifle for several years now and it appears that the time has actually come to make it happen. I'm pretty tight on money and a good portion of the parts are going to be outsourced to family members for holiday and birthday gifts. I can't justify spending any...

    Looking for a varmint/deer rifle

Talked to a guy at Cabela's and had him do a special lookup. He called me back and told me that he couldn't get the Howa 1500 from any of his suppliers... I'd assume it was more of an issue with the stainless/thumbhole, wouldn't think the standard 1500 would be that hard to find. -B&C
