Hey all,

I'm building up a load for my father in laws 300wsm and wondering what bullet you all would recommend for my elk hunt this November? The barrel is 24" 1:10 twist topped with a suppressor.

I have some 154 hammer HHTs, but I'm not quite getting the downrange velocity I was hoping for. Best group is with varget at 3150fps. I could push it to 3250 with RL 16, but that's touching pressure pretty hard and only gets me an additional 100 yards above 1500ft/lbs… with this bullet I'm getting max range of 500 yards with 1500ft/lbs. And that's fine, but my 6.5prc will get 1500ft/lbs out to 700 yards with the 125HHTs…

So, my question is stick with the 154HHT, or move to something like the 200gr ELDX or for more knock down and range?

I won't be shooting past 600 yards anyways, but just was wondering what you all think.

Cheers

In my experience of 1, the 200 grain eldx at 2882 fps from a 300 win hammered my bull at 443 yards and according to 4DOF was going around 2202 fps with 2153 ft/lbs. Definitely not at top end load but it was getting towards book max. Bull ran about 40 yards and was dead when we got up there. I dont plan on changing from the 200 eldx.

To 600 you've got a world supply of choices!

Back when I ran a 300 WSM a lot I used a 155 Scenar, that'd be a great place to start.

Real world of the 154's are shooting well I'd sure not fret the 100 fps that you're not hitting that you'd prefer to hit. Hope that makes sense.

I know more than a few serious elk hunters in Montana and almost everyone is using a 180 Horn SP, 180 NBT, 180 Accubond or a Partition. I'd add the 200 Sierra BT into the mix as well. Any and all of those will take elk with ease if one does their part. Run the 180's around 2900 with H4350 or R17 and you'll be Golden!

Most people make elk killing way tougher than it is. Always tougher to find them (unless on private or guided), and always tougher to get them back to the truck (unless again one's guided or on private).

Best of luck to ya!

Go to the Hammer website, Data, 300WSM tab look at Varget 3,350 top velocity for the 154's. Way better than where you are and better than where you were hoping for...
30 caliber holes are twice as good as 6.5's really.
