Cow elk hunt with 115 year old rifle

What do you make your 30-03 brass from?

Very cool rifle for hunting.
You can use 30-06 brass in the 30-03, it was adopted by the us military in 1903 to replace the 30-40 Krag, hence the name 30-03, it was loaded with a 220 grain round nose bullet, cartridge dimensions were nearly identical to the 06 only the neck is slightly longer, cartridge length was 2.540 (which is the case length of the 280 rem) in stead of the 2.294 length for the 06, 3 years later in 1906 the military changed the loading to a 150 grain and shortened overall case length, changing the the name to us 30-06 Springfield.

Great job! I want to hunt with mine also. I have a 1925 in 30-06 that I had restored. It also has the Lyman sight. My second model 95 was purchased in 2000 as the anniversary model in .405 Win. Hammer still makes bullets for it. 260 grain at 2600fps. Fun to shoot occasionally.

I was able to harvest this cow elk this past weekend. I wasn't really planning on using the 1895 on my meat hunt but when I saw she was standing next to a road and easy to get to the decision was made for me haha. I had one of my 1895s chambered in 30-03 with a climbing Lyman shooting a 180gr round nose. At 203 yards she never took another step. It's a blast hunting with old winchesters
Very cool rifle and still useful for hunting game. I have a Winchester 1886 lever in 33 WCF and hoping to harvest a deer with it.

Very cool. Local gun shop owner I know shoots a deer every year with an old gun he picks up sometime during the year in his buying. This year it was with a 44-40 cartridge. I can't recall what rifle this year.

I still shoot roosters with my grandfathers 1946 model 12 16 gauge but your rifle is way older.

Very nice, I love keeping the old guns out in the woods, a couple years a go I shot a huge black bear, a small white tail and a Red stag with a 1905 Manlicher schonauer in 9x56ms. I also hunt with antique Damascus shotguns and other odd balls.
