Bullet for .308

I second the 130 Barnes for hunting.

Shooting 170 + gr bullets for any distance shooting is a thing of the past. That was back when the 155 and 168gr bullets had such poor BCs that they went transonic at 800yds. The new 169 SMK outperforms the traditional 175 SMK, plus you'll get a higher velocity.

It's going to depend a bit on your environment. How far are you planning on shooting? Those corelokts should be sufficient.

For hunting with a 1:9, go heavy. I had a nice load for my 308 using 200grn ELD-X running 2350 out of an 18" barrel. I was using IMR4064. Hits 1000yds was not difficult. I was building this for an elk load.

I'm not experienced with 9 twist in 308, but I wouldn't worry much about it. My experience is every rifle seems to have a preference for a particular load. Those Corelokts may be fine. Only your rifle will make that determination. I used to buy many different types of factory ammo to test when I purchased a new rifle. After diving into hand loading I use several different bullets and powder combinations. Below are some boxes I bought for a 308 win. They now just sit in a cabinet.

Same bullet, 24" barrel 1-10 twist using 46 gns of Reloder 17, coal 2.98" gets me 2600fps with mild pressure signs at an elevation of 2100 feet. I have taken deer out to 750 yards on calm days and hit 6" steel at 1000 yards quite easily … flight time is over 1 sec so gusty windy days are very challenging

I like heavy bullets for distance and hunting. I shoot a 208 Hornady in my .308 with Reloader 17. It has been consistent to 950 yards and I have taken deer, antelope and elk with it.

I just acquired a custom built .308 with a Defiant action with a 20" 1:9 twist barrel. I know the common twist rate for a 308 is generally 1:10. I'm gonna use this gun for whitetail deer and hogs. I have a suppressor that I will run sometimes. What bullet recommendations do ya'll suggest? I have a few boxes of Remington 150 gr core-lokt tipped. I would also like to see how far I could stretch it out on some target shooting.
I just finished building 2 different 308 rifles. One loves the Barnes 137grn TTSX running at 3125fps. great deer and hog round. The other is running Hammer Hunters 174grn at 2945fps. Dropped a bear last month without a problem. Funny I have built and worked with many different rounds and settled back to the 308. Have fun.

How fast is that 208 moving at 950?
