Wyoming Elk Info

I'd suggest the Black Hills area in northeast wyoming, the units south of I-90. The altitude isn't terrible, lots of easy access and some really nice bulls that typically will respond to calling.

i'm no expert, been one time this past October. Went to unit 59 and glad i had a guide. Bears everywhere. got a nice elk that i'm proud of but dang there were a lot of bears.

He's not going to draw a tag with just 4 PPs over in the Black Hills LE area that was mentioned. If he wants to hunt this year, he should put in for the general elk tag in the Regular Draw and he'll easily draw his tag with his 4 PPs. Then he can decide if he wants to bow hunt in the September archery season and if he does all he needs to do is buy the $72 nonresident archery permit. That will allow him to hunt most general units in the early season with his bow and if he doesn't fill his tag he can go back in October and hunt during the rifle seasons.

Only some of the units. Before I applied for a general tag I would look to see if there was a type 9 tag in the regular or special you would want that takes 3-4 points. If you are strictly an archery hunter, or only have time for 1 hunt and its going to be an archery hunt a type 9 tag isn't a bad option.

If you are going to hunt archery then come back with a rifle if you aren't successful during archery then a type 9 won't work for you.

There are what is called LE or LQ units, which stands for limited entry and limited quota. You can apply for one of those units and if you draw it that is the only unit you can hunt with your tag. The alternative is to apply for the general tag and if you draw that one, which you can easily do with the 4 PPs you have, that allows you to hunt in any unit that isn't listed as an LQ/LE unit. There are many of those throughout the state and that's why I made my previous post as to what to do if you definitely want to hunt this year with either a bow or a rifle or both if you buy the archery permit and have time to hunt in September and October.

I've heard there are quite a few that are nice and rather understanding- not just ticket dispensers. Haven't ran into one in years.

The further you get from Jackson Hole and Yellowstone the nicer the game wardens are. It's like Disneyland up there
