I've hunted Wyoming as a non-res a fair amount. If you aren't stuck on elk there is a lot of opportunity out there, and it isn't really that hard to get away from crowds on foot if you put some time in studying the maps. Obviously the more rugged the area, the fewer people you will generally see, but you don't have to be a world class athlete to hunt there either. Get in decent shape, chase antelope first to get an idea of what your up against, and work your way up to tougher hunts and new challenges. I enjoy the challenge and planning required to get into some of that beautiful country as much, if not more than the hunt itself.
