why not 30-06

"Whats wrong with a 30/06?"

Nothing really, maybe lack of case capacity to drive high BC bullets required for LR shooting. But then again I guess 308's work pretty good for folks too. It all depends on application I guess.

Im new to the long range scene. Im planning on building a 300 win mag for a long range rig but I was just curious.....whenever I was browsing through the forum and I see very little to no mention of a 30-06 for long range hunting/shooting say out to 1000yrds? What am I missing? Seems to be a pretty good 30cal option....can be loaded with great bc bullets, good velocity and I assumn readily availability in brass to reload. What and I missing? Would a custom type rifle say with a blueprinted remmy 700 action thats been solidly bedded with a quality barrel and stock not offert the same 1000yrd accuracy as say a 308 or 300win with the same qualities?

The last rifle I had put together two years ago is a 30-06. I used a Brux 26 inch #5 contour barrel. Pre 64 Mdl 70 receiver and a McMillan Adj. HTG stock. Around 10.25lbs ready to go. I have worked up two loads with it one with the 190gr Berger @ 2680fps the other with the 200gr Accubond @ 2716 using Reloader 17. The 200gr with RE17 is still being worked on but kinda backed off because I am really wanting to get my hands on the new 190gr Accubond Long range and test it with RE17. Just have a hunch if I can get it to shoot it will be the one for this rifle.

Have taken elk and deer with both. The longest so far was a elk this season at 489 yards with the Berger. Dropped like a rock. This Berger load max's out at 700 yards....drops below the 1800fps they recommend. Very accurate load and just wacks-um.

You are not missing anything. A well thought out 30-06 with a load that shoots is hard to beat and you can play with it all day!

the 3006 is a very good long range caliber its cheap to shoot lots of load data good barrel life if u know your range and trajectory of your load u don't need a superfast mag the burns more powder than a Abrams tank think barrel life and powder consumption

Bubba- with the new remington long range avasilable in 30-06, there is a new and inexpensive long range 30-06 available. if you go to riflemansjournal; German has done a lot of shooting long range with the 30-06.

I've got a couple 30-06s. Heavy and light. Been shooting the heavy for over 10 years now. When it was new wiith 26" bbl, I was shooting 190 SMKs to 2920 fps, and 208s/210s at 2800 fps via RL22.

Eventually I cut my heavy to 22.5" plus a Badger brake. I'm now launching 208s at 2720 fps via RL17 and 4000-MR.

Handloading the heavy/high BC bullets you'll be about 150 fps behind the 300 WinMag with same bbl lengths. Barrel life is very good. I've got over 4000 rounds down mine and it still shoots sub-moa easily. Rifling is starting to look a little soft near the throat, but still goes all the way back.

I shoot the 30-06 past 1K frequently with great results, It has played pretty well to a mile with 208s, in summer atmo at 4000'.

Here are some examples of accuracy recorded during 100 yard load work. This is with a Douglas #7 contour, 1/10 twist, stainless bbl.

110gr VMax,

155 Scenar,

190 SMK,

208 AMax,

210 Berger,

240 SMK,

MontanaMarine- It's nice to see another southpaw on here

Your rig sure seems to like those 190's... very nice shooting. Is that moly I see on there? What advantages are you seeing?

When I was at the Air Force Academy, I co-authored a detailed paper on "The Ballistics of the 30-06 Rifle Cartridge."

http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a570469.pdf

I'm a big fan of the cartridge. The paper shows a number of performance graphs with different bullets, and a number of graphs comparing performance with the .308 Win and .300 Win Mag.

Some of our later work on terminal performance of different .308 bullets at lower impact velocities was not complete in time for the paper. Once the impact velocity is below 1500 ft/s, most longer .30 caliber bullets will tumble rather than expand or fragment. A longer .30 cal bullet can do a lot of damage tumbling, but expansion and fragmentation create more wounding. Depending on your tracking skills, the terrain, and the game you are hunting, the .300 Win Mag provides more energy at long range and might be a better choice.

If you might need to reach 1200 yards, the .300 Win Mag really starts to outshine the 30-06.

Outlaw, yes moly. The heavy '06 has had a steady diet of moly since it was new back in 2000. About that time moly was new and a lot of folks gave it a try, including myself. I still use it.

I don't have any proven data to quantify the advantages. Some say there are no advantages.

Bottom line is it's a dry high pressure lubricant, so it reduces friction and pressure.

No worries brother, I've seen a lot of shooters that swear by it & a lot of shooters that swear at it. I only asked based on my curiosity, i've been pondering HBN coating myself.

Yeah there's some newer methods for reducing friction out now with HBN, Dyna-borecoat, melonite, etc.

I'll likely keep on using moly, but I've never been one of those guys who will debate/argue about it for weeks on an internet forum......grin

:D Understood. If it ain't broke, don't fix it....

Or in my case, if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is....

I just built a 26" heavy .30-06 Ackley Improved, just to have one. I've never liked the regular .30-06, but I love Ackley calibers. As if yall didn't know that... :D
