White tail only gun 300 mag or 7mm mag ?

Go with the 7 mag. Once you shoot a couple of deer at 400, you'll naturally want to extend your range. I load the 162 gr Amax. Haven't lost one yet. I use a 2 man ladder stand set up out to 1100 yds. You'll be fine and good luck.

400 yard gun white tails from tree stand not a bench power line gas line hunting . Fast shooting no time for turret spinning . You have seconds . But Ranges are marked out with flagging . What gun would be best 300 win mag or 7mm mag ?

7mag.

If 28 Nosler. Hahaha. Of course I would say that.

My choice for the hunting you describe would be a .270 Winchester. It's a great deer caliber well beyond 400 yards and it is so easy to find rifles and components/ammo.

But, since this thread is about choosing between the .300 and 7mm magnums, I will say...either one. You will not notice a lick of difference between the two when using bullets between 150-180 grains. Not at 400 yards anyway. Nearly identical recoil, trajectory, drift, and killing power.

If you favor lighter bullets I'd get the 7mm. If you may use this gun for larger game in the future I'd go .300. If neither of these apply, flip a coin :)

So 140 accubond dead on at 200 I could hold on the back at 400 and take out lungs ?

There pretty much isn't a shoulder fired rifle out there that's going to allow you to do that if you're sighted dead on at 200. Most everything is going be 13" or more low at 400 if it's sighted at 200. Nothing available to us shoots that flat.

I have a 300 rum now and love it . But I have 2 boys also lol . The rum is nuts 1/4 moa at 200 yards . But know way I'm buying 2 more . I have a weatherby 7 mm rem Mag it shots 1 moa . I'm going to put a new scope on that one . Now it looks like one of the new TC rifles getting 1/2 moa with a new vortex scope = 1100.00 . What's funny the new gun goes to the 17 year old the WBY is my deer killer the last 20 years . The custom rum belongs to my 14 year old lol .

I owned a 7mm, gave it to my son. Awesome deer gun. I bought a 300 wm. I love it, awesome rifle. For deer only I would take the 7mm but I would much rather shoot a 6.5 or .260 if it was going to be a deer only rifle.

A 270 WSM loaded with a 110 TTSX going 3500 fps + sighted in at 250 yards has you 2 inchs high at close range then 2 inch low at 300 and 11 inches low at 400. This has proven to be a good combo. Also could run a hot 6.5 with a 127 LRX and you might take an inch of. This is the kind of shooting that a Barnes pushed super fast excells at!!

The 7RM w/ 140's (could always go lighter) zeroed at 300 would do about what you're asking, but I think a 6.5x284 will do it better w/ the same weight bullet.

My cheap winchester ballistics says 140 zeroed at 300 has 9.5" of drop at 400 and the highest rise around 200yds of 4". So zero to 300 put it on its heart after that playing a little KY windage. The app doesn't have the 6.5x284 but at 140gr everthing about the 6.5 bullet is better, AND depending on the bullet/lands configuration you could potentially run this on a short action.

First thing that popped into my mind was "Dang, I need to find a bigger tree to attach my 2 man ladder stand onto".

I don't have it on a small tree by any means, but the wind still moves me around a bit. Or maybe it's because I have 2 extensions on it and I'm too high on the tree? :)

Wow!... I am not sure I understand why you would need a long action rifle? While I remain an advocate for 308 I believe a 270 win will be your best and most accurate friend.

Looking at a Hornady SST SP 140 gr w a 250 yard zero -- assuming a twist rate of 1:10... You drop 13" at 400 yards with 1700+ ft pounds of energy at 2357 FPS. I would prefer a high BC 150 gr if you have a rate of twist around 1:9.5.

How many deer have you killed? You don't need a magnum for deer at 400 yards but they do work. I would go with a 25-06 Ackley Improved! No recoil & really dead deer. 270 win would also be a good choice.
Thanks, Kirk

I built a rifle once that was specifically aimed at white tail deer. Something I could walk a Midwestern draw with and point and shoot to 400 yards. I built a 257-300 Weatherby sending 115 Bergers at 3800 fps. Point and shoot to nearly 400 yards but really left a mark when it hit one. I now shoot a 300 win mag with a 215 Berger for a mid sized magnum. I don't feel I could do any better for a deer rifle.
