Which turkey gun?

If you like to call them in, you don't need a 3 1/2 inch gun. I like the older stuff and how well they work if you can get them to come to a call.

George Daw 12 gauge made in 1866 and a Burgess 12 gauge wrist slide action with 2 inch shells…

I've been using a Benelli M2 in 20 Gage for the last five or six years and it has worked great. I have killed turkeys out to 40-45 yards when I couldn't get the stubborn Tom to come in any closer. A healthy does of #5 Winchester Supreme turkey loads has been doing the trick for me. I hear the TSS is great stuff but man is it expensive. I have never found the need for it! Good Luck and keep us informed of which direction you go and how the hunt turns out.

I am looking for a new shotgun for turkey hunting. I've always been a big game hunter and pheasant, but am going to try turkey this spring now. I'm trying to decide between the Weatherby Element turkey or the Mossberg 930 turkey.....

What are the pros and cons between the 2?
Mossberg..... PLLLLLLLHHHHHH! (CON)
WEATHERBY....YEAH! (PRO)

New to this forum, far from new in the turkey woods. Seeing as this post is almost 2 years old, interested in what the OP ended up with.

Turkey guns sure have come a long way from where they started! Technology gone wild! Lol!

With the shell and choke tubes available now, I completely agree with an aiming device such as a scope or red dot.

But it's still all a want, and you have the ability to make it whatever you want. From muzzleloaders to state of the art.

And while technology can, and does, help. It's still a game of more the indian than the arrow, at least to me it is.

But we do this stuff because we want to and hopefully enjoy it. So whatever you use, get good with it and enjoy!

Mossberg makes a 940 with a 18.5 inch barrel turkey gun. I used to hunt with a Rem sp 10ga turkey gun. Now I have 2 410's I use. I bought a new Mossberg sa 20 GA turkey gun. I like the 22 inch barrel. Fixing to get a Mossberg sa 28ga turkey gun. I have a Tristar G2 viper 28ga. I use squirrel hunting.

I have always loved my remington 870's, but am shooting the browning cynergy over/under now with the 24
" barrels and burris fast fire 4. It patterns incredible. I run jebs chokes, and shoot 3'.

For many years the only shotguns I had were Remington 870's. They served me well for any purpose I chose to task them with, from rabbits to
Geese and Turkeys, trap and skeet. I was envious of the Remington 1100, but it was just a bit outside of my price range. Finally I came across a used 1100 12 gauge, but it was manufactured back when they came with one barrel and one choke. Unfortunately this one had a modified barrel, which for my type of hunting at the time was not acceptable. I sent the barrel off to America's Gunsmiths, who at the time were in Kenosha and a part of Gander Mountain. With the demise of Gander Mountain they are now independent and in Burlington, WI. They installed screw in tubes in the barrel which turned the shotgun from mediocre into a good shotgun and a great turkey gun, however it was still chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells. With the move to 3 inch and the Remington 11/87 with screw in chokes made a great shotgun even better. Shooting Federal Black Cloud 3 inch #4 steel shells, ducks, and geese started to fall from the skies in limit filling numbers. The steel #4's are equally deadly on Turkeys which have all been 1 shot, 1 turkey with the longest turkey taken at 50 + yards this last spring. I also shot my first straight 25 shooting trap. I have tried others, Browning A5 and Benelli Montefeltro but keep coming back to the 11/87. I was glad that with Remington's comeback that they re-introduced the 1100 and 11/87 while dropping some of the newer and sadly inferior shotgun designs of the old Remington company. Currently I only have two shotguns, an 1100 20 ga with a skeet barrel and the 11/87. Those two serve all of my shotgun needs. It's hard to improve on perfection.

Happy to see you back with some post and great wisdom…as usual.

If you want a pump the new 870 is pretty nice and a Win SXP is also good. If you want a semi, I'll recommend either the Win SX4 Turkey or the Retay Gordion. I'm personally using a Win SX4 and have hunted from Washington to Maine with it over the past couple of years and I have zero issues.
