I help clean up and help with repairs at our local gun range and for years the majority of brass we pick up has been 223, 308, 30-06, 7mm rem mag, & 300 win mag. Still quite a bit of 270, 243, 25-06 and getting more 6.5 now a days.

I sort and clean the discard brass at our local range.... 223 is most common for rifle - however the challenge is that many of the more interesting cartridges brass at our range are kept for reloading. 308, 243, 338, 30-06 are all very common.

Few groups:
1)
257roy (100-120gr pills)
7mm Allen Mag(140-195gr pills)
338-378roy(or 338 Lapua,338norma)

2) 25-06, 30-06, 300win Mag

3) 24 wssm, 7mm saum, 325wsm

This will cover big boy mag group, oldies but amazing, and then short fat mags

All three groups would cover anything in North America and most other continents.......except maybe Africa....but even there you would be good for most game.....except maybe the big 4

I'm in group 3 for all of my hunting needs, 243 WSSM, 7mm WSM and 325 WSM, I love them all.

Great question.....if for big game:

1) 270 win or 270 WSM. Deer and Antelope sized game...does well as a varmint and predator round too..

2) 300 Win Mag or 7mm RM. Elk, Moose
3) 375 Grizzly, Moose, Bison, Big bears,,,also this is the minimum caliber for African dangerous game.

There is plenty of room for debate in this. I based the above on my personal experience, down range energy and having bullets with high ballistic coefficients. I also avoided some of the newer cartridges due to their newness, proprietary nature and reputation for blowing out barrels too soon.

Which three must have calibers based on current bullet selection, not necessarily cartridges. For medium to large game if you only had three choices. List in order from most important to least important as if you would have to narrow down to only owning the first listed.

Of course we all have a few more than that.
