Which 1-2p tent for backpacking in alpine environment?

If yo have any thoughts of putting a stove jack in that tent I would suggest testing it really well in high winds and with a snow load if possible.A tent collapse with a hot stove and a cherry red pipe could be catastrophic and life threatening in the back country

10-4 on that!

Since I'm having the stove jack sewn in, I'll also be adding guy line attachments, clothesline loops, extra grommets for staking and better stakes. Maybe even a zipper. Like most of these hair brained ideas of mine, I could have probably saved 35% if I had just bought the original product. Still, I saw enough of a price differential to take a run at it.

It's critical to have a pole that's good and strong as well,When there is a strong wind blowing there is quite a bit of pressure to push /bend the pole down and pull the stakes out

Hmmmmm

I've read where that pole bends quite a bit in high winds. Somehow I see duct tape in my future!lightbulb I ordered up a medium stove that can double as a heat source for a 8-man if I decide these tipi's are the way to go.

The problem with heavy snows is I sleep like a baby through them.

I've been building tipi tents designed for woodburning stoves for a number of years. They are a great combination of fairly lightweight, spacious, able to stand up in and warm shelters due to the stove. But, they require great care and understanding of what is going on. There is little room for error in a tent of this type with a stove in it. Just approach this very critically, carefully and methodically.

A quote from your site:

"Stoves are HOT and DANGEROUS and have SHARP edges. Very serious injury and/or death and property damage can occur. WildSide Systems absolutely takes NO responsibility for injury, death or property damage. Common sense says never leave any fire unattended (or be sleeping with the fire going unattended), so, DO NOT leave these stoves unattended. These tent/stove combinations require highly responsible, aware and alert adults for safe operaton AT ALL TIMES. Absolutely no drugs/alcohol should be used when using these shelters/stoves. Keep children and pets away from hot stoves at all times and always be careful around stoves at all times as stove edges are also very sharp. Stoves require great care in set up, installation into tent and take down--this is clearly a responsible, aware, alert adult activity only. If you have ANY questions whatsoever, STOP and contact WildSides Systems for information. Have fun and be safe."

Thank you for the reminder.

i'm looking into getting a tent that i can use to backpack with. does anyone know about these Wyoming lost and found tents? they seem to be made just for the backcountry. don't think anyone mentioned them, thought i'd ask.

338 mike,

I see those tents are made out of poly. Be very careful, It could go up like a candle.

Noted, but treated to CAPI-84 fire retardant standards. More or less like your sleeping bag. Spark arrestor is ordered as well. My main conceren is the pole. I've got some ideas to strengthen it.

Dave,

Which Wyoming lost and found tent are you talking about? My friend has there ripstop 8 man tipi, made out of nylon. Its seems to be built very well. I am not a fan of poly tents so I can't comment on them.

not sure, want a teepee style, thinking about the 5 man. would like a bottom though. planning a backpack elk hunt in the uintas this fall. second week of october, should have a 4 season.

Seekoutside offers a separate bathtub style floor that can be used inside a floorless shelter. I got one to try in my Kifaru Paratarp but the paratarp was to small to really appreciate it. My hunting partner and I are looking to also get the sawtooth or 4 man from Kifaru and I'll likely use it there. To me that would be really nice, the condensation can run off into the ground but you still have a waterproof layer under your sleeping set-up. Also muddy boots aren't a problem like a full floor.

I set up my Paratarp with the bathtub floor to catch any leaks so I could spot them a couple weeks ago to test it out. The weatherman was calling for a slow 3 day rain. It stayed dry under it throughout the whole storm except a few drops under the seam on the tarp. The rain soaking into the ground made it damp about 4" in from the sides under the floor. My floor was set up about 2" in from the sides and stayed dry so the 4" of damp ground all soaked in from ground moisture underneath and wasn't due to a leak.. I e-mailed Kifaru and got a tube of seam sealer a couple days later. I also ordered an annex and a stove pipe for the parastove I picked up on a forum. I'll get a chance to use it fishing this spring and summer alot and will update on how it works. If I like this set-up well enough we will go with the larger sawtooth or 4 man and either get another stove pipe for my little parastove or get a small stove also for the bigger shelter. The paratarp rides in my daypack for shorter hunts for un-planned overnight stays or bad weather, and I want to use it on some scouting and fishing trips.

mcseal2,
I have been thinking about that very setup. Even with a stove its a light weight 4 season camp. On Rokslide.com they are giving away a Kifaru paratarp for best pic. Its the cheapest way to get Kifaru gear:)

I set up my budget Appy Trails 2-Man (advertised as 5-Man) Backcountry Tent before I sent it to the Tent Maker for mods. Stove jack is in & stove ordered (shipping is slow). It might mess up hunting as I linger in the mornings with my robe, slippers, cocoa, pipe and newspaper!
