What to do with my impulse buy….

Before you do anything, examine why the 6.5x284 got its bad rep and what you might want to do with your gun. It was the hot ticket for a while in LR and F class etc. Rapid fire was eating barrels . But for a LR hunting rig, it has basically the same internal capacity as the 6.5 PRC. And hunting rigs don't eat barrels. And in the long action, you can load lots of stuff to whatever you want. Assuming the throat is decently long.

I would do NOTHING until I secured some 6.5x284 brass and tried it. A lot of Savage barrels are shooters. Better put 100 rounds down the barrel to break it in. It won't shoot right away, probably.

I have 200 rds Lapua brass 6.5x284 for my Savage 6.5x284 Proof carbon fiber gun. Sorry, you cannot have them. I did not know that Lapua stopped making that brass......

I think you got a heck of a deal on an awesome cartridge in a great rifle. This cartridge is very effective. I was disappointed to hear you were considering rechambering right out of the gate.
For what it's worth, not only is brass still available for it, but my first two choices (American made) are both available.
Get some quality American made brass and go shoot that thing. I bet it would be awesome!

Put a 118 Hammer HHT in it and get ready for 3200 fps. Rechambering that awesome cartridge is the last thing I would do unless you prove that the factory did a poor job with chambering...but that's just me.

Might also want to look into cartridge overall length compared to mag length in the 6.5 RPM..you might be knocking onnthe door of a limitation there.

Bro. What the hell did you put your wife through? If it was me the last time I got into it I came home from work and she made it look like the house was robbed. Still missing some firearms especially my brothers 22 win mag he bought when he was 15 and passed at 20 from cancer.
Hope the heck you bought her something smells good or pretty other wise you might be in the same boat. I miss the rifle more than her by the way.

I have or had 7 6.5-284 barrels on various configurations of rifles and it's a great cartridge. It works very well in a longer barrel. If you plan to run a shorter barrel set up I would go to a SA magnum vs the long action and just run the 110. The RPM is also a solid choice, just have no experience with a short barrel in that cartridge if that is the way you want go. I run the 6.5 PRC in short barrels and the performance has been very good. Currently running a 6.5 PRC Sherman Improved. Works fine for what I do. In the end the 6.5-284 is an excellent standard bolt face long action cartridge in stock form. I ran 24-28 barrels and hammered a lot of predators with them.
