What range should a person initially sight in at.

Your zero range depends a lot on your technique.... some dial and some use reticles. If you dial, it doesn't really make much difference, except if you zero close you will have more clicks at long range. If you hold over or use reticles a longer zero is more advantageous. I choose the dial method for longer shots, but will pratice and be capable of holdover or reticle for moderate ranges if a quick shot is needed. The more you practice reticle (I have the 2 MOA NP-R2) the more flexible you are. For a fast flat shooting cartridge, 250-300 yds is a good zero.
