What is your recoil threshold poll?

I nearly dropped it. It flew out of one of my hands and somehow I barely held on with the other.

I could not and do not understand how anyone could even use that effectively in the field against a dangerous animal.

My 505 Gibbs in a 9lb rifle was my threshold with 600gr Woodleigh PP at 2350 fps…was able to reach 2500 fps with that bullet, but 150+ft/lbs of recoil was a one shot proposition that I did not repeat. I also stupidly fired a shot with the 1lb recoil inertia damper removed…never again!
I handle my other big bores without issue and often laugh when asked how bad do I find the 458 Lott, 416 Rigby, 338-416 Rigby Improved, 500 Niro 3 1/4" or 450 Rigby….none are like a 505 Gibbs!

I've heard that the 505 is more than most anyone can handle! I've wanted to try a few heavy recoil cartridges…..the 505 didn't make the list! memtb

416 Rigby at ~58 ft-lbs was too much for me.
I shoot multiple rifles in the 30+ ft-lb range.
The biggest factor affecting whether i could withstand recoil is how well the gun fits me.

My 375 Weatherby shooting 300gr pills at 2890fps is around 70ft/lbs recoil, my 416 Rigby with 410gr Woodleigh SN is just over 60ft/lbs with it doing 2530fps. I have never had an issue shooting big bores, my double in 500 Nitro is 14.5 lbs and a pussycat to shoot.
The 505 is the most brutal rifle I have ever shot due to its lightweight, it smashed your trigger hand just as hard as your shoulder! Have a video of a guy shooting it and the guys hat, glasses and earmuffs are blown off his head and he had a dead arm for 3 hours, felt really bad about that but he didn't pull the gun in tight, like limp wristing a handgun.

30 years ago I shot one round offhand from a ruger number 1 in 460 Weatherby magnum. It was not fun. It is etched in my memory.

You are lucky the scope didn't "etch" your frontal lobe.

I own a variety of big magnums, light and heavy. One of them is an 8 lb rifle propelling 300 grain SMKS at 3000. Unbreaked.
I tolerate it fine in small doses.

But the last time a shot my 870 turkey gun with a 3-1/2" tss shell, it took a month to recover.

Another veteran of the Turkey Trauma. I put an RMR on my Benelli. I had to sight the beast in. 12 ga 3 1/2" TTS, and I had met my match!

My personal beast is a Freedom Arms 83 in 475 Linebaugh. Full load Buffalo Bore in a 3 lb revolver is violent! (sad news on John Linebaugh's recent passing.)

First started deer hunting with a Franchi 48al with a 21" slug barrel using Brenneke slugs and open sights. That gun only weighed just over 5lbs but kicked like a mule! At 13yrs old I probably looked about like this:

375 H&H New Haven Winchester rig, it's not really the recoil upper limits in any way, just not much reason to look for more recoil tho. They just made a very well designed rifle.Has the the weight, sights, wood, and the stock design, that works.

If you ask me I will tell you I love my lightweight short mags. If you look at my groups they would tell you I favor my 280 AI, 6.5 prc, 6mm CM and similar.

I agree with you on the 3 1/2" turkey loads, when you shove them through the tightest choke possible, it definitely gets attention. Have yet to meet a rifle that rattles me like those.

I know there's more posts that mention shotguns and 3 1/2" loads and for good reason especially in non gas guns.
That recoil is so sharp it's no fun.

LOL- pulling in tight. Thats not a problem.
A range session would be shooting 10 rounds, and I would have capilation bruising afterward. After a box and a half, I realized I was developing a flinch with that gun. No Bueno. Sold it.

I've owned a couple BMGs, shot a T Rex and a 20mm Loti. Back in the day recoil was not an issue.
Falling head/shoulder first into cement from 20 feet didnt do me any favors. Today I avoid recoil when I "can"
The Grendel is my goto, the Sweede and 06 only when neeeded and the 338 Edge when it has to be hit way out there
