You posted a link with data stating that SEVERAL of those cartridges on that list shoot flatter at 500 and 1000 yards, than a 300 RUM…do YOU believe that data is true?

What do you know about the .30 cal cartridges on that list, shown as being flatter shooting than a 300 RUM?

I was having a conversation with a fellow member here over "flat shooting cartridges" because I've been in search of a flat shooting cartridge/bullet combination for coyotes.

I'm currently shooting a 25-06 which gives me a MPBR on a 4" target of 298yds with a 115vld. I'm switching to an 80gr barnes ttsx to see what kind of speeds I can get and hopefully stretch that MPBR a little bit more. When this barrel goes south I will probably go back with a 25-06AI or 25sherman.

I know there are some wildcats out there that could possibly be "flat-er" and a realistic choice for coyotes and would like to hear yalls opinions.

I'm not looking to neck down a 308win to 17cal or run a 110vmax in a 300rum or anything wild like that. I'd like to keep powder consumption as low as possible. Barrel life isn't a huge concern but it like to get 800 rounds out of it.

What are yalls thoughts?

I've been thinking about 25x7prc to duplicate the 257wby performance........ then I built a 25max. I haven't tried anything lighter than 130gr in it but im considering 80gr ttsx

Flattest round I've shot is my 22-250AI with the 35-grain hammer hunter. Running 4865 fps, it has a MPBR of 506 yards on an 8" target at sea level. Point and shoot.

That's pretty dang flat. My 25-06 load only does 297yds on a 4" and 375yds on an 8"

But while we're still beating this topic to death (as we should!)….

Maybe another way to narrow the question might be to start another thread (perhaps I'll do that later for kicks) titled

"What cartridge has the greatest "hold on hair" with no scope adjustment range. I think that's more or less in the spirit of what the OP was originally after.

No cartridge that's a serious contender for king of one mile or two miles is going to be in this list, despite being flatter at far reaches. Similarly, no cartridge and bullet combo that dominates pure HOLD ON HAIR flatness contests (wind drift be darned) is going to be found at a KO1M or KO2M event!

Another metric for flatness for yet another more specific thread would be "absolute farthest MPBR possible" within a certain parameter of what constitutes "point blank". It's not the same as hold on hair. At all. The goalposts and contenders for the title change again when we're asking not only for zero scope adjustment but also allowing ZERO holdover, "Kentucky windage", or compensation of any kind to stay within a circle of given size, whether that's 4 inches, 6, 8…..

For an MPBR defined by no holding under or over at all and staying inside a 4 or 6 inch circle, ballistic coefficient is a distant second place concern, if at all. VELOCITY BABY!!!!!! . Ultra light varmint bullets going at warp. Sub 4000 fps cartridges need not apply.

I had a .257 wby for a bit, got the 75 grain hammer hunter to hit 4170 fps out of a 24 inch pipe. That was very flat. So flat in fact that I shot clean over a deer at 350-400 yards as I just off habit held a bit high haha…second shot I broke the habit, held dead on, and smoked it.

That's flat. Not quite 6.5-300 Weatherby but pretty flat.

A 100gr ttsx at 3740fps gives you a MPBR of 300yds on a 4" target. A 147eldm at 3200fps gives you a MPBR of 277yds.

That's just the data on the 6.5x300wby that I found. I'm sure it can be pushed harder.
