What is it with the 270 wsm

My Cooper in 270Wby mag got into a cycle where first shot was dead on, second shot good, third, fourth walked away from the first two, every time. Recoil was driving the cartridges against the front of the magazine driving the bullets into the cases making them shorter and shorter, changing velocity. I started annealing and crimping, now all is normal. This occurred on the 4th reload of the belted magnum cases.

Interesting that you've mentioned that. I'm running my necks a 3 thou under and always load one at a time on the bench and accuracy is amazing. Bean has posted a ton of info on crimping (particularly with Hammers) that got me to thinking about my standard protocol. This raised the eyebrows even further and I'll definitely do some testing.

I'm curious if the 270 stuff is a little more available than the more popular calibers? I already had 3-400 pieces of brass from previous rifles and hammers aren't a problem but I never really looked around much

My buddy just called and said his grandson (12) just shot one with the 270wsm. They were too excited to tell me shot placement but said it was about 100 yards and dropped like a rock. Said he made some shooting sticks that did the trick

I'm sure somewhere out there is a guy that bought a 270 wsm and it wasn't accurate. Just don't ever hear of it. I think if you own one it likely only has one real purpose and it's not to win the popularity contest.
I'm that guy. My dad gave me his CA Classic Hunter in a 270 wsm and it will not group any factory ammo under an inch. Have tried, Bergers, Nosler Partitions, Barnes, and Accubonds in all weights. I haven't had time to mess with it much, but I am about to start reloading for it. Thinking of trying out some Hammers first, as I have had good luck with them.

That's awesome

Dang, well, I'm sure it happens. If the hammers work to tighten, then it's probably something with the harmonics of the barrel just not even being close to where they need to be and would be a good time to try a heavy tuner. Only if you're wanting to run something other than the hammers. Those 157's would be on my list.

I am limited by the 1:10 twist that the barrel has, otherwise I would try the heavies.

I need to get out and finish tuning some 116 hammers for my brothers browning medallion and I got to thinking about the cartridge. I mean, has anybody owned one that doesn't shoot ridiculously good? And do they have any purpose other than being a death ray? There's probably some 270 weatherby guys that wonder the same thing. This is the 3rd one I've been around that really doesn't care what it spits out. I kind of have the same feelings about the 25-06 and the 257 weatherby but every once in a while I'll hear someone getting a lemon and maybe someone has or had a 270 wsm that wasn't a death ray. I don't know why I brought it up. Lots of cartridges that are better in other aspects but for just simply killing things, I don't know.
I have 2. One is a MRC that is a natural killer and the other is a HS Precision PHL that is a laser along with being a natural killer. I don't know what it is about the 270 wsm but they hit hard and kill. Great round!!

Sorry, don't kn

sorry, dont know what I was thinking. Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with the hammers except a little spendy for recreational shooting so a tuner might let you shoot something less expensive but still drive nails. I really like using them if I want to stay on the top end of velocity and keep a coal. I've also used them to force a rifle to like a bullet that it didn't like which was the 300 prc and 250 Atips. Something to consider anyways

It took a little while for me to get my First and only 270WSM,my great Friend now gone 3 yrs,had Brownings and Tikkas in the Great 270WSM,his rifles were stock factory, boy could he get them humming,He was the best Reloader I've Ever had the Pleasure of knowing and calling my Friend.
