I was at a club for meeting yesterday and found these 4 cases on bench. They are FC 300WM but what happened to the neck of this brass? I think they were shot in something other than a 300WM like a 300Wby? Thoughts?

Didn't you know a 300 Wby is just a 300 WM AI? Just shoot to fire form! ;) I can't think of how many people have told me they have a "300 mag Weatherby", But got really confused when asked if it was 300 Weatherby mag, or a Weatherby 300 Win mag......Yes it's kind of scary out there!

If this bugs the OP, just say and I'll remove......a buddy just sent this picture to me, brass he picked up. 30-06, right case is one of his. Any thoughts on what caused the inverted donut?

yes, does look like a wby but doesn't surprise me one bit --I have a buddy that works at a lgs-- he has had quite a few people come in trying to buy the wrong cartridge--seems like if it has the same numbers in it they dont go any further

357 sig for a 357 mag gun
22lr for a 223
300 wsm for a 300wm and vice a versa
45acp for a 45 colt
380acp for a 38spl
on and on

Usually happens when someone buys a Weatherby but doesn't want to pay Weatherby prices for loaded ammo. I used Weatherby brass for my 257 WBY Mag but I did form some from 7mm RM brass back in 11 or 12. It didn't give me as long of a neck as I wanted so I found some 257 and over paid for it. I've heard of people doing this though with the big 300. Usually deer accurate since the headspace off the belt.

Had a buddy buy a 700 300 rum from dicks sporting goods. He told the guy behind the counter he needed some ammo. The guy behind the counter throws some 300 win mag ammo on the counter and sells gun and ammo to him. My buddy calls me later that night and asks me if its all the same thing 300 rum and 300 win mag and if he could shoot it. I told him that I wouldn't. Probably would not have been catastrophic but no need in taking a chance.

Yeah, looks like a Weatherby shoulder now. What a great idea on making cheap Weatherby brass! I bet he could shoot them 100 times before trimming those necks. Lol. I know a guy that shot a .270 Win in a 7mm Mag on a Mule Deer hunt in Sonora, Mexico. He missed the buck. Luckily no one was injured...

If you fire a 300 WM in a 300 Weatherby chamber the neck length of the case will end up approximately .390 thousandths long. So that looks like what happened to me.

Everyone can make a mistake, but 4 in a row:(. I look at almost every piece of brass that I fire for many reasons and had this been done it would have taken only one to realize there was a problem.
