Imagine setting out to cross the wide Atlantic in a small sailing vessels, like under 70 feet, with no certain port to access and resupply. Some thought the world was flat and vessels would sail over the edge. Courage & determination. Crude compass and DR & sunline (latitude) navigation.
When I was real young my folks took me out to their favorite Italian family restaurant where I was allowed to sip a glass of Fiuggi (Italian bottled water) having a shot of Chianti mixed in. The meal was super delicious having pasta with rich red sauce. Desert was usually spumoni.
Then a few years later a local Wampanoag described the rape of the north american native people & culture at the hands of European white guys.
My folks cautioned me not to mention this stuff during our annual restaurant visit.
