What happened…pierced primer???

I definitely don't disagree with this. Adding 10gr charge weight to that book max for the parent case is really pushing it too far.

I am seeing pressure signs on every case. 92.0 to 95.0gr.
2860fps with a 285 is very "impressive" to say the least unless he is shooting a 32" barrel.
YEP.
Ejector marks and cratered primers on all of them.

I have to agree and say that the case heads/primers look like the pressure is high. An aspect of pierced or blanked primers that is often overlooked is follow-up after the incident. That little disc of brass has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is usually through the firing pin hole and inside the bolt. Primer blanking is not uncommon when I fire proof rounds in the rifles I fire at work. Any rifle that shows missing material in the primer after proofing gets a complete bolt disassembly. That little disc can really lead to troubles further down the road if it is left in the bolt. It can be the cause of light strike/no strike situation or can even find its way down into the trigger.

I started this project several years ago before hodgdon had any load data for 338 Norma mag. I came up with a starting load of 87 grains H1000 through a combination of looking at several sources of load data for standard 338 Lapua and 338 RUM knowing the improved case capacity is similar to these two cartridges. I also referenced all the data shared on this forum in the 338 Norma load data thread.

My initial load work up was from 87-92 grain's expecting 92 to be near max. There was no pressure sign at 92 grains and it shot well so I used that over the last year. I wanted to find max and see if I can reach a higher node so I did some additional work up starting with 92 grains and going to 95 grains.

At 95 grains there is a slightly noticeable increase to bolt lift.

It would seem I am way over pressure compared to the hodgdon load data and I have no issue considering 92 grains as max for my rifle but I don't believe that explains what happened here.
