What cartridge for NOT long range (300 yards and in ) whitetails?

22-243 with a fast twist barrel and a 80+gr all copper bullet...
22-243 will exclude you from some of the best white tail hunting. Colorado requires a .240 or larger as do several other states. I have 22-250 Rem varmint rifle but a 7mm RM for large game.

The 30-06 is a good all around cartridge. That would get my vote. BUT remember whatever the 06 can do the 300wm can do better.

No it is a wildcat, .243 case necked down to a .22 like the 22-250 is .25 cartridge necked down to a .22.

The 22-250 is a SAAMI cartridge so the brass says 22-250...the 22-243 brass says .243 Win...just like the 22-284 brass says 6.5-284 Norma, but it has been used extensively for long range big game kills featured in several long range "kill reel" type videos...

yup, my 10 year old kid has that one figured out... It is still a 22, and I wouldn't shoot anything but paper and prairie dogs with any 22 I've got; lead core OR mono bullet.

I use the 6.5x55, .300 Savage, .250 Savage, .260 Rem, .30-06, .45-70, .300 WM, and .338 WM. It all depends upon conditions, distance, and whether I'm hunting multiple species at the same time.

Too bad, you're missing out.
nope, I am firm believer in bullet mass and Taylor KO factor-(within reason of course; I'm not using a 450-400 on deer any more than I'll use a 22)... In both of these respects-mass and ko factor, a 22 is a joke. I pretty much start at 6.5mm/270 for white tailed deer and work up from there.

The barrel will be stamped 22-243. You would be cited if not arrested and have your gun seized if you got caught in a state restricting legal cartridges to larger calibers.

Len doesn't appreciate his site being used to promote illegal activity.

Even the .223 is plenty for southern WT's at sub 400yds ranges.

Bigger northern deer, heavier body mass changes the equation completely. A really big WT buck in the southern tier of states will rarely exceed even 200lbs live weight with most coming in below 150.

Get up to Iowa or Maine and you can easily double that. I've seen Mulies in N. NM and CO easily exceed 300lbs.

What's appropriate differs greatly on where you are hunting.

It might be stamped or it might not be.

As far as promoting illegal activity, I don't really care, people can make their own decisions based on their own states law. I can use a .22 cal where I mainly hunt, next year lead will be banned statewide...I may or may not follow that law...my decision.
