What are you shooting at? Long Range Targets.

All my serious load testing is done on paper at 500/600 yards. Most of my long range (600-1500) practice/testing is done on .5-1.0 MOA rocks measured with my reticle. I make sure that I can see the impacts.

Good points. Testing, load development, and practice for shooting technique is one target and practicing for hunting solutions is another. They are not the same thing. I recall being laughed at in this thread regarding this exact issue. I think it is imperative a person can do both. If you can't shoot a good group then you can't work up load or expect to be able to shoot LR with any sort of repeatable accuracy.
It seems the more common theme in this thread is to have a bigger back ground with a target spot to help the shooter and spotter see the results. I like this too and when shooting rocks I do consider the back ground for feedback in case of a miss. The two targets I just made are easily portable on the 4wheeler or in a pack. The disk is 19". Ami is tired of shooting rocks so I made the steel targets and we started shooting balloons in the mountains.

I think it was Broz who said he puts a bag or so of lime around the target to spot a miss at long range!

Yup, get a bag of ag lime. Fine white dust, and toss it around the target on the ground. It will make spotting misses easier. A bag will also go along ways and do a few targets. But expect white shoes when done. :D

I've had a friend cut some 15mm bisalloy plates for me.
This is a pic of the approximate set up for our informal long range shoot.
The idea is that you must KNOW your rifle before you shoot. In line with hunting. All the ranges are arbitrary, just put the target down when you are sick of carrying it. (within reason). Then ranging has to be done from the perch. We all have Mildot systems and are trained in their use, so that should help. One of us has expressed the intention of getting a laser ranger.
We have about 3 locations in mind but this pic is representative of the locations. South West Western Australia just out of Katanning in case you want to Google it.
We are making a 300 Rem Ultra Mag on a Weatherby MkVII, a 308 in a Savage 112 (I think), and my BSA CF2 with a 6.5x55 Swedish (27" Tobler SS match barrel).
Plates are primed black then painted white with a small fluoro dot. I don't have any pics as Im at work (outback WA).
I'm going to scrap the chain and replace with conveyor belt as per a suggestion I read here.
Thanks for the great site.

Interesting result on Saturday. One of my bullets cracked the disk and one, not sure which, of the 6.5 140 bergers punched right through the steel leg on the target stand at 1080 yards.

I shoot out of my hunting shack year round. here are a few pics. Every place that is circled has bait and a steel target. The picture was taken a couple of years ago befor i put steel up at the closer targets (under 1000 yards) All of the closer targets have 12 x 12 ar500 plates and the 1000 and 1065 have 12 x 24 ar500. The 1365 has 3/8ths mild steel and is 16 x 32.

Found a few more. 1 looking out the right side (NW), one out the left side(SW), and one set up on another bait pile (no steal).

The side windows also open up outward.

That is awesome! How high did you build it?

The floor is about 20 feet off the ground in the back and 25 feet in the front. All done by hand, from the digging the holes and setting the poles to screwing on the roof.

Here is a pictur of the walkway. It isn't all that steep due to the fact that we are on a steep hill. My dad, who was 72 when we built it said ....NO LADDERS....PERIOD!!! Ask and ye shall recieve!!
