asd9055 , perhaps it is because you are running newer AR's . the older bolt actions had 1:14 and 1:12 twist rates . I don't remember offhand what the first M16's ran that Eugene Stoner designed but I think it was 1:14 with a 20" barrel . They were at that time designed to run the 55 grain bullets . It wasn't till we started running heaver bullets that they started running faster twist rates in the Armlite Rifles I also have an older Ruger in 22-250 that has a 1:14 twist and it also likes the 55 grain Sierra hpbt's . History of the AR and M16 family of rifles is interesting I'm glad to have been here to live some of it , today it is interesting that they run 1:7 ,1:8 and 1:9 twist rates commonly and up to 75 grain bullets when in the past say 50 years ago all you could find was a 55 grain bullet for the 223 and 5.56 rounds and mostly IMR 4320 powder was what every one used to load them with . After we got involved in Afghanistan the M16's and then at home the AR's as well as the rest of the things dealing with firearm evolved at a faster pace then before in our history not much good comes of war but that is one good thing that has .

You are correct. It's just that I have not seen one in like for ever. I do have a Ruger 77 Hawkeye and a Win M70 both 22-250, both 14 twist. It's funny, I did a college research paper on the M16, hair was black then, was 50 pounds lighter, and brain was functioning a lot faster. (yeah back when you could write about firearms and not get expelled)

I had no exists on larger badgers out to 125 yards with 50 vmax in a AR15. I do seem to recall a mess one time when I hit the spine of a yote when it was running away uphill.

I have had good luck with the 108 eldm out of a 6CM. 50gr Vmax in my 223 doesn't isn't too rough on them either.

What twist and fps in the 6mm creed? A friend is waiting on a 7.5 twist, thx

Wondering what every one is using that's easy on fur for coyotes. Am interested in velocity, twist and bullets. Don't want this to get onto cartridge rant as we all have our favorites.

Two buddies & I use standard twist .22-250's with 50 - 55 grain ammo on coyotes. (2 Savages, 1 Mossberg)

I've always thought that a copper solid like a Hammer or Barnes in a small caliber (.20 or .22) would be ideal for fur. But no experience personally

I like 20 cal for yotes a lot. 39-40 grain at 3800 isn't bad at all for damage. Have a friend who shoots around 500 a year with a 20 practical and that combo. Right now I take my 6.5 PRC to the field since I am hunting wolves as the primary and yotes are opportunity kills. I run a 135A tip for wolves. So far damage on wolf pelts are minimal, pretty happy. Kills from 30 yards to 750 on the prc for wolves. Most of the yotes I killed last year and this year are all over 500 so the 6.5 is perfect for those ranges and the small body. I have shot a pile of yotes and wolves with a 6.5-284 147 at 3020 fps from 25 ft to 1300. Most are fine for damage, a couple are a mess if you hit a shoulder or direct rib but generally the exit is 1-1.5" and the pelt can be sewn.

In and out on Yotes and Cats.

I ran some of these out of my Tikka Varmint 1-8" with 26gr of H4895 in Nammo brass. They were just over 3200 fps, but a lottle hard on primer pockets. I backed it off to 25 grs and they still shoot one hole. Never had an exit bigger than a quarter except a dog I hit facing me at 225 yards. Opened her up like a zipper.

50 and 53gr V-max at about 3100 out of my 18" 1-8" AR is my go to most of the time. I have had one exit on coyotes out to 350 yards, and that was one at 25 broadside. Blew a 4" hole on a bobcat at 100 with the 50 gr VMax. All other coyotes were one hole in and DRT.

Jonas Brothers in Denver use to pay me $50 for an unskinned coyote and $55 for a skinned one. Once I found that out, I never skinned another!
My goto until I burned the barrel out was a Rem 700 in 22-250 with an old 3-9x Redfield. I shot 50 grain Sierra SPs and they worked fine.
If you hit bone, almost any bullet is going to do damage. I shot one at 181 yards (mange covered) with a 300 WM and 165 Barnes TTSX traveling over 3,200 fps. Looked good going in, but a 2" hole coming out. No experience with a 224 size Barnes.

My current favorite .223 coyote load is a Speer 52gr HP (Speer part#1035) over 27.4gr CFE223 and CCI-400 primers, COAL 2.220", in LC brass. It's running right at 3200fps from my 18", 1:8 twist BHW barreled AR. This load typically does not exit on a broadside shot bobcat. I have yet to have an exit on any coyote and they generally just tip over and die.
Second favorite is the Hornady 53gr HP, (Hornady part# 2250 which Rocky Mountain Reloading has on sale right now for $145.00/1,000 delivered ).
Same powder, primer, brass, and COAL.

I've had good results with 50 gr Sierra Blitz King and 50 grain Nosler Varmageddon Tipped. Shooting these from a 1-12 twist Sako 75 Hunter (1997) 22 inch barrel. Using Benchmark powder @ 26.2 grains I get 3384 fps on average with both bullets. Best accuracy with the Noslers. Standard deviation is 7 fps using Federal 205 Match primers in LC 09 brass. The SBK is loaded to 2.294" and the Nosler is at 2.280. The Sako has a very tight 223 Rem match chamber which is about .006" shorter on headspace than a 223 Wylde chamber so going above the 26.2 Benchmark in this rifle opened up groups and started giving me larger ES & SD number. I have some 40 grainers loaded but haven't used them on critters yet.
