So if you watch the video on ffp vortex viper gen ii reticle you can't even see the reticle when zoomed out at 100 yards. Even with the reticle light illuminated it was hard to see. This is the first time I've witnessed a ffp reticle. Is that really how it is? If so I think I'll stick with sfp for my type hunting. The link below is the video I'm talking about.

That's a fairly poo representation of what the reticle actually looks like I've shot both the ffp and sfp gen 2 pst. You should look through both first hand and compare to see what you prefer they both have advantages.

I'd take a look through them yourself instead of using the video. I have a FFP Gen II PST and like the reticle quite a bit. I have both SFP and FFP scopes... I'm starting to lean towards FFP more these days (NF ATACR & NX8, PST II) actually.

Yeah, the reticle is fine. He's using low mag probably for better camera quality or it's the camera by itself. The reticle at 25 is actually to big for my taste to use at that power so reticle size isn't an issue in real life. However illumination is not aimpoint daylight bright. To be fair, you won't find that to often in scopes that cheap.

This is exactly why I don't prefer ffp scopes for hunting. I know they have their place, but in a scope with 6+ zoom ratio, I don't like the reticle at highest or lowest magnification.

Unfortunately I can't look through them as local dealers don't carry them.

I hunt mostly on low power as I'm in bigger woods, however, there are a few spots where shots start getting out to 500 yards and I want more power than 12x. My eye sight is not the greatest so I like to really zoom in when I can.

A FFP scope is not made for quick shots at close range in dark timber or low light contrast situations. Even as in the vid, the bright glare from the sunny spot makes it hard for your eye to find the thin reticle, even eliminated. ALSO depends on how much milage your eyes have on them. LOL
All depends how how you shoot. If you are always trying 450 yard tail shots at deer running into the woods, then a FFP is your tool...

My hunting is 90% in big timber where shots get maxed out at 200 yards and most being 150 Or less. My current scopes I have set on 4 or 5x for that hunting situation and it is definitely low light. However the other 10% I'm hunting a field which has a 600 yard corner but most shots would be in the 400 to 500 yard range. It sounds like the sfp is for me, from what you state.

Unless your competing in prs style matches or something like f-class then theres really no need for ffp in hunting applications IMO. Especially if your hunting woods then you want to be able to acquire that reticle quickly on low power. I dial very everything so to me theres no need to have a reticle that's always the same for hold overs. Now if I'm competing then I'm taking a ffp all day.

That video doesn't do FFP scopes justice. I was a SFP fanatic for years, but I now have FFP scopes on all of my rifles but two, and that's only because those two have such great scopes on them.

Some scopes have a donut or similar for this usage.

Also, for what you described, maybe a SFP reticle is best....maybe with a bdc at a max power of about 16x.

What ffp do you have?
