VLDs Don’t Fit in Ammo Case

I have to carry 338LM and some 300RUM loads in the big XL box:

Works with 210 VLDs sat out at 3.820" for me. 338 LMs have to be put in point down due to body diameter, but the 300 RUMs stand up.

Feenix, General RE Lee has a unique long throated STW chamber, something on the order of 220" long.
I found this quite puzzling as my own reamer has 'zero throat' and the leade in total is only .076" from memory.

Would need a 4" box to be able to seat anywhere near the rifling with a .220" long throat.

That is definitely beyond SAAMI COAL. My Berger reloading manual shows 3.650" COAL for the 168 VLD on 7MM STW. How did you derive to your COAL or CBTO (https://bergerbullets.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/COAL.pdf)? Have you shot them yet? Repeater or single load?

I am not asking about how you measure it but rather how you decide on the seating depth. For instance, .015-.020" off the lands for hunting. Most of us will do a series of tests on seating depths, did you? That is why I am asking if you have shot it.

I am fully aware of this article, and I glad you read it. If you go to the Berger site (https://bergerbullets.com/vld-making-shoot/) and look at the bottom, it has the link I provided you in #13. Also, Phil Hoham is an excellent source of information. If you talk to him and tell him your "actual" set-up, he might be able to help you. At this point, I will just assume that you have not done the "actual" seating depth test. Good luck and happy safe shooting.

Thank you I read that article and very good information. One thing I noticed is the information about the Hornady OAL gauge. The Hornady bullet comparator and the notch on the gauge that allows the calipers to lay square with the base of the case solves the issues mentioned in the article.

Me too, this the largest/tallest MTM 50 round box you can get. My 338-416 Rigby Improved with my 323g CNC turned solid do not fit it. Have to carry them loose in a bag.
My 416 Rigby rounds fit it without drama and so did my 505 Gibbs rounds, it's only the VLD rounds that have trouble.
Although the 285gr VLD just fit in the H-50 XL in the 338-416 Rigby Improved.
The 505 runs 3.840-3.90 depending on bullet used and the 416 Rigby runs right on 3.750, both fit with ample room in the H-50 XL, but VLD bullets are too long at 4.20"
I really haven't found a box suitable other than custom CNC turned one's but they're just too expensive.
If anyone hears of anything suitable, let us all know.

All he needs is the MTM case for the 378 Wby. My 300 Wby with 210 VLds are at 4 inches and fit in that case with plenty of room. It is the more expensive case with hinges and a hinged latch. They have sqares that your cases sit down into.

We have no importer at present in Australia for MTM products, but I can order through Grafs or Brownell's.
