Velocity Question?

Careful now. I'm not advocating one way or the other.

I'm just reporting on the 20 shots I fired from one rifle with a 24" barrel.

I cut mine short just because I wanted to. I did consider 6.5x47, but I already had competition dies and lots of lapua brass for 6.5x284. And, I already have a 6.5x284 with a long barrel.

I'm just saying you should be able to get 2900-3000 fps from a 26" barrel with 140's and the right load.

As for QL... I suppose you mean QuickLoad which I hear people refer to a lot. I tried the demo and it's so cheesey that I didn't figure it's worth the price.

thanks,
richard

Austin,

You be the judge. Here's my limited perspective on the matter...

I was just so excited when I got the pieces all together that I had to go shoot it. But right now I'm waiting on my brake to show up so I can install it, bed the action, and then do a proper load workup.

This was just warmup for a 6br that I have in the works with some top notch components and high expectations.

Best of luck!

Okay thanks for all the help but here is what I got. I have a brand new custom brux 26" barrel on a surgeon action, bedded in a grey bull stock. The first day I started out with retumbo working 55grs up to max, lapua brass cci mag primers, 140gr berger vlds 2 thousands off the lands shooting through a chrono. It was about 60 degrees and cloudy with chrono 15' from muzzle.

55gr- 2,864, 2,799, 2,805

56gr- 2,867, 2,900, 2,836, 2,903, 2,875

56.5gr- 2,921, 2,893, 2,897, 2,898,2,905

57gr- 2,948, 2,939, 2,900, 2,902, 2,898.

Nearly all loads were under an inch at 100 yards, I waited a minute or two between each shot. In fact 56gr went into one ragged hole.

Since I wasnt getting very consistent velocity I switched to H4350 the next day.
Groups opened up to around 1.5" to under 1" with some.

46.5gr- 2,808, 2769, 2,770

47.5gr- 2,844, 2,839, 2,860, 2,878, 2,939

48.5gr- 2,914, 2,915, 2,911, 2,945, 2,920

49.0gr- 2,890, 2,898, with pressure signs so I quit.

I guess Im kinda lost what do you guys think I should do next? Play with seating depth, change primers, I noticed noone uses mag primers. This is the first time I have thrown a chrono in the mix and its added a whole new variable. What do you guys think?

Austin, Don't take to much stock in high spreads early on in a barrels life. Barrels do in fact brake in during the first 50-100 rounds and speeds will generally increase and level off at the 100 round mark. I usually reserve load development until I hit this point, and the starter load in a 6.5x284 is usually between 50-51.5 grains of H4831sc.

You won't believe it but when I started my 30" f-class gun with 51 gr of h4831 it shot at 2875 fps, that slowly increased to 2975 and caused me fits at the team state camp match last fall. I had 12 rounds thru that gun and put another 120 thru it during a match. Verticle climbed thru the first day, was a bit better on the second, dope from saturday was not the same as sundays.

I still use close to the same load, 51.3 just modified my seating depth and managed to take first in a 24 person field on Memorial day. with about 400 rounds down the pipe.

I have now backed my next batch of loads down to 50.6 as it is showing some pressure in the warmer weather.

Okay will do. I think I found my load. 52grs of 4831 sc giving me a velocity right at 2,900 right now. Put three shots in one hole at 100 yards.
