We had a lot of hired hands on the ranch when I was a kid in the 50's . My uncle would go to Spokane and bring back horse meat for them to eat.It seemed sweeter tasting to me.
They never did name who specifically introduced the sheep into the ecosystem. The hunters were doing a good job. Just not fast enough, I guess. And another excuse was rescuing a hunter. Like they never have to do that for hikers, rock climbers, or just a occasional person who gets lost. lol
That my understanding. While in Africa they generally serviced there wild game at any place you eat. While there I didn't get a bad piece of meat. There meat isn't as gamgee as our wild animal are. Very mild flavor. We had a lot of hired hands on the ranch when I was a kid in the 50's . My uncle would go to Spokane and bring back horse meat for them to eat.It seemed sweeter tasting to me.
Goats. I read about awhile back. Forget year. Maybe 50's.They never did name who specifically introduced the sheep into the ecosystem. The hunters were doing a good job. I read that to. But they never say who was directly responsible. They are pretty cool looking. And could see why someone would want to hunt them. I know in the early days people had all kinds of exotic pets if you had the money. I knew a guy who had a few lions as pets with his Rottweilers. He bought a lot of beef..Found these:
Mountain goats are not native to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Descendants of mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) introduced in the Absaroka and Madison mountain ranges during the 1940s and 1950s established a population in Yellowstone National Park in the 1990s.Aug 2
The non-native goats migrated into the Tetons from the Snake River Mountain Range on the Idaho-Wyoming border. The Post Register reports that mountain goats were introduced into that mountain range to increase hunting opportunities in the 1960s and 1970s.Feb 28, 2022
I'd take a wild guess and say BLM or Fish & Game or whatever they are called out there probably introduced them.I read that to. But they never say who was directly responsible. If I remember correctly it was F&G.I read that to. But they never say who was directly responsible. They are pretty cool looking. And could see why someone would want to hunt them. So what I am hearing is that since it's only a cow it doesn't deserve to be out there wild along with the Elk and Deer? If you want to correct the issue open a season on them and require a tag to hunt them. I eat beef when there is no venison around, might be fun to hunt them instead of having some government hunter drop them and leave them for the bears, wolves and coyotes. Heck could turn them into a profit center for the bureaucrats to get more money to **** away on useless stuff. OOPS!!!If the bureaucrats thought it would profit for them they would be on it like stink on a skunk. These feral cows are not on "prairie eating grass and sage brush". They're in dark timber harming some critical elk and deer habitat. So let's keep the Feral cattle that shouldn't be there in the first place at the sacrifice of the Elk and Deer herd? Am I hearing this right?
Many years ago there was a drop off process for horses in Fort Worth but people got upset because it was to much like eating your pet. People cried and they shut it down. Now people are happy again.Friend near Dallas had a sick horse. Said they trucked to 0le Mehiko to be euthanized.
Bovine are not like elk and deer. While they are out there on the range, the meat is so tough and sour, you would need to put them into a feed lot for several months before it is fit to eat. The meat will be tough with very little if any fat on it, and if they have been eating sage, that is all you will taste in the meat. If you could herd the cattle into a pen or coral, you might be able to get enough grain into them long enough to make the effort worthwhile.
I think cattle like elk, deer and antelope only eat sage as a last resort where snow has covered everything else. Not saying it doesn't happen , but Iv'e never seen cattle eat sage brush in our country , maybe it's called something different in other parts of the country.
