It's gonna be a while yet but I want to make two guns the same in every way for me and my pops. I already have a 7mm stw built like an accumark. He has a model 70 in 300 ultra. I'm putting this up here to see what people have what ideas for calibers you'd choose. I just want enough *** to be able to drop an elk at over 1000 if needed we both like long range shooting so no crazy exotic but I'm guessing it will have to be at least a 7mm rem mag. Just want ideas really. I'm still thinking about specs so open to anything fir now lol.

If you want to take an elk at OVER 1000 yards, you will want a 30cal or better yet a 338 cal rifle.
There are a lot of choices, 300 Win with 215 Berger out of a 26-28" barrel would be the smallest I would go for elk past 1000 yards.
If you want a rifle that would take an elk 1000 yards or less, a high capacity 7 mm like a 7-300 Win or 28 Nosler shooting the 180 Berger would work as well.
1000+ yards is a very long way, and takes a lot of practice and gear to be able to take an animal at those distances.

Should be a fun venture for you and your father. Just so happens my father and I are doing the very same thing. We are building two 300 WIN's off of 700 actions, specific to elk at 1000 and in.

Good luck and have fun.
